Looking for title of ww2 movie
I think movie was made in the 50's or 60's(unknown actors)
The setting was .......german officer would take convicts on a train to the russian front to fight for germany.....If they lived they would get pardoned.
Officer in charge eventually became disheartened...... seeing trainload after trainload of men getting slaughtered on the battlefield.
He re-routed the last train of convicts to switzerland(I think) so that the prisoners could escape into a neutral country........thus avoiding certain death. All of the prisoners escaped over the border.
The officer at the end of the line, broke his glasses, was caught and summarily executed by his persuers.

Re: Looking for title of ww2 movie
Von Ryans Express was a good one w/sinatra........running and running
and the theme of this movie was similar.
It was focused more on the colonel in charge of the train......the soul searching he endured while sending men to the eastern front.
Wish I could remember the principal actor(s), then finding it would be easy.
Was not a surprise ending.
Any suggestions for other knowledgeable movie forums?
