Maybe it's somehow regional... in Texas the coupon became effective today through Sunday. I got an e-mail on 07/26/11.

Post it. If you are able. It'd probably work for all.
They sent a coupon that was not as good as usual a couple weeks ago with a 20 dollar purchase requirement that recently expired.

I got that one. Didn't even bother with it. I was disappointed thinking it might replace the regular % off coupons.

You can use this every day of the sale, which is pretty cool. I got season 14 or South Park for $9.

Re: Half Price Books - 40% Off Coupon

Thanks for the heads up, as I didn't get the coupon via e mail. Picked up Alias S4 for $9. One of my top wants and a good deal. May hit another Half Price tomorrow.

There is one in Louisville but I have never been in it. Do they have many Blu-ray or TV on DVD titles? And is it mostly new or used?

Most locations have tons of TV DVDs, both used and new. I've seen only a handful of Blu-ray TV titles there. Most in my area have at least one shelf section full of Blu-ray titles - a lot of used movies and former rentals, but also new and sealed copies of Image and Shout! Factory Blu-rays (none of the Corman releases, mainly music and sports stuff).

Picked up three seasons of Highlander: The Series on Blu-ray for $8.99 each with coupon. Unfortunately the shitty upconverted PQ is so poor on these releases I should have stuck with the DVDs.

I'm pretty sure these were sold to the store by an individual and not something they carry regularly. You can usually tell the stuff they get straight from a distributor by the yellow or red pre-printed price sticker that includes the item's name. If it has a white price sticker with just a price and a date, it's likely a used item that they bought from someone. The Highlander sets were in great condition, but I've never seen a legit release look as bad as the first season set (and it's the "remastered" version without the unremovable side bars).

Re: Half Price Books - 40% Off Coupon

Remastering only means that new masters were created for a given release, it does not mean that any restoration happened. And an new masters are completely dependant on the quality of the source.

If the Highlander TV series was only recorded with video cameras rather than filmed, the picture quality won't get any better than what you see on a DVD. Though Blu-Ray encoding does allow for better color and sound than DVD encoding.

The Doctor Who Restoration Team has commented many times about this regarding Classic Doctor Who releases. Since the episodes were recorded with video cameras the picture quality is limited by the camera's resolution. Note: some segments were filmed in several episodes, but the shift in picture quality from lower quality video source to higher quality film source and back again would likely be very jarring in an attempted HD release. One serial was filmed entirely in 35mm though, Spearhead From Space could have a worthwhile Blu-Ray release if the BBC/2 Entertain wished to pursue it.

Thanks for the heads up about the coupon Undeadcow -- for some reason I didn't get an email about it either.

That's why I put the word remastered in quotes. The set I bought was the second release of season one on Blu-ray. The first release had unremovable blue bars filling out the sides of the image. The second release fixes that problem, but is no different in quality otherwise.

The first season of the series was shot on 16mm. The Blu-ray set is upconverted from a 480i source and not the original negative. More details here and here.

Re: Half Price Books - 40% Off Coupon

Ok, went to the Hurstbourne Lane store today. Looks like a treasure hunt type place. Books are a great deal. DVD's I fount not so much. They had one full book shelf rack of Blu-Ray out of probably 20 racks. They seem obsessed with pricing titles at $14.98 so Blu-Ray was not much of a deal there. They had a large selection and there was a few deals but for the most part not much for me. Might check back again in a week or so if another coupon pops up.

I did find a complete series of King of Queens that appeared new that would have been about $55 with coupon. I thought about buying it to flip but that set is one of the most heavily boot legged so I was a little to nervous to buy.

But I must say they had some awesome cashiers they offered my coupon back and said use it all you want today. So I did!

Coupons at HPB come by frequently but not so often as weekly. They usually have 40%-50% coupons 2-3 times a year.
