All the Cameron Diaz talk had me think about this when it comes to Hollywood. I just found it funny/weird that they'll have women that are not attractive playing roles where they are supposed to be "the hot chick" and then other times have beautiful women play roles where they are supposed to be plain and homely.

Anyway, as for the playing hot but definitely not I've got:

Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight -- I mean seriously, even in that scene where the Joker calls her "beautiful" the lighting and make-up she wears makes her look god-awful.

Julia Roberts in Ocean's 11 -- When her character, Tess, is revealed Brad Pitt's character makes a huge deal out of it, like he's watching a goddess. Perhaps the script was written for someone else.

I saw Bad Teacher... Cameron Diaz got stomped out on the hotness scale by Lucy Punch by unanimous decision... and I think Diaz is attractive.

Sarah Jessica Parker walks into a bar. The concerned bartender looks up and says, "Hey Sarah, why the long face?"

Even at her best (L.A. Story), Sarah Jessica Parker was pretty "meh".

I saw the thread title and automatically thought of Maggie in Dark Knight...it was like Nolan was trying to make her look haggard and unattractive w/that lighting.

Jennifer Garner in, whatever she is in where she is meant to be hot...those ears!

I had never noticed and was watching the Invention of Lying when I saw dumbo come in I thought he was gonna feed her peanuts. Man it was like 2 slices of ham pushed up on the side of her head.

I don't think Nolan wanted Maggie G to be some ungodly hot woman in TDK. I think he just wanted an adult woman who can act well around the solid cast. She looked a lot better in that world over Katie Holmes who visually stuck out like a sore thumb.

Dead Ringers. Genevieve Bujold is not only not hot, but not a very good actress, either.

The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Uma Thurman isn't ugly, but I don't consider her to be the absolutely striking woman she's supposed to be in the movie. I thought (pre-tatted up and politically outspoken) Janeane Garofalo much more attractive and she played the "frumpy" one.

Spiderman 3 had worse things than Kirsten Dunst going for it. It had Ron Howard's creepy looking daughter, acting like she was hot shit. Now she's getting marginally famous (based on her looks), and it actually bothers me slightly.
