City of Life and Death(Chuan Lu) 2009
I see this is in theatres in the US now so I thought I'd give a heads up on this excellent film. It's an incredible movie, truly brilliant. Some of the scenes will stay with you a long time. I saw this well over a year ago and I still think about it.
It's a film about Nanking. Currently 'Certified Fresh' at 93% on RT with more reviews coming in with the US release. Check it out.

I have the DVD of this, purchased in Chinatown, but haven't watched it yet.
I'm annoyed at the Chinese government and the filmmaker. A year or two ago, the Chinese were threatening to withhold this film from international film festivals that showed a documentary on Tibet. In fact, they withdrew this film from an L.A. festival for that reason and then had the filmmaker say it was his decision. I wish the filmmaker had the guts to stand up to a government that acts as bad as the Japanese fascists did during the war.
I urge interested parties to read "The Rape of Nanking," by Iris Chang.

were running off topic here...BUT:
Talking about Nanking...Christian Bale just finished filming a film called "13 Women of Nanjing" directedy Zhang Yimou. Budget on the film is from what i hear China's most expensive film, running at $90 million.

13 Women of Nanjing is a period war drama based on Yan Geling's novel of the same name. The movie takes place in China during the 1937 "Nanjing Massacre," a six-week period during the Second Sino-Japanese War in which Japanese soldiers murdered hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers and raped tens of thousands of women. Bale plays John, an American Catholic priest who is sympathetic to the Chinese and risks his own life by sheltering a group of women from the Japanese.

Yes. I don't think you can portray the same sense of danger. The film being in color adds life to the characters and you feel more empathetic when you see the blood.
