Fave Lars Von Trier Film?
I've only seen Antichrist which i loved. And was debating which one of his movies i should dive into next. Mainly looking at Dancer In the Dark or Breaking the Waves.
actually thats partially a lie, i technically saw Dogville but i only watched an hour before giving up. Just couldn't get into it

Re: Fave Lars Von Trier Film?
Can't go wrong with either of those.
I also like Europa/Zentropa which is a complete opposite of those two - very stylized, and relying heavily on filmmaking technique. But it managed to tell a story well told.
The Kingdom (Riget) TV series is also quite enjoyable. And maybe you should give Dogville another try.
The rest, while interesting, is not nearly as good in my opinion.
The Element of Crime and Epidemic are exercises of style with some technique but no story.
The Idiots has no technique and no story. It's like Jackass before Jackass, only with group sex.
Dogville is pretty good; maybe you should give it another chance. On the other hand Manderlay is truly terrible.
The Boss of It All is entertaining, nothing more.

I haven't seen Melancholia (obviously) The Idiots or The Kingdom yet, but I would rank Lars' filmography:
1. Antichrist
2. Breaking the Waves
3. Dogville
4. Dancer in the Dark
5. Medea
6. Europa
7. Nocturne (short film on the Epidemic DVD)
8. Epidemic
9. Manderlay
10. The Boss of It All
11. The Element of Crime
1. Antichrist
2. Breaking the Waves
3. Dogville
4. Dancer in the Dark
5. Medea
6. Europa
7. Nocturne (short film on the Epidemic DVD)
8. Epidemic
9. Manderlay
10. The Boss of It All
11. The Element of Crime

I'd say it's between Dancer in the Dark and Breaking the Waves. Go with Dancer.
It took me a few times to finally get through Dogville, but when I did I absolutely loved it. It contains of the darkest and best lines ever at the end of the film and it's Nicole Kidman's best role yet (yes, I've seen Rabbit Hole). Give it another chance.

well....
If Hitchcock and Bergman had a child, and that child then had a child with Wenders' child, this child would be killed by the child of Von Trier!
hope that helps!
and Dancer is my fav although Dogville and BTWs are both quite good too.

The best way to describe his movies are: think of the bleakest film you've ever watched, increase it by five and that only begins to describe how dark his films can be. He has a very fascinating eye for exploring the dark side of the human condition and physical/mental illness.
But at the same time, he's gotten some of the best performances by leading actresses - Emily Watson, Björk, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Nicole Kidman and even Bryce Dallas Howard - in the last few decades.

Re: Fave Lars Von Trier Film?
Von Trier really annoys me. Lots of style, some assumed substance, but not much there for real. His stuff feels oddly hipster-ish, if that makes any sense. Someone who is trying really hard to reinforce some as-of-yet non-existent style of filmmaking, but mostly fails or flounders with it. I agree that he gets some really bleak shit out of his females actresses, but that troubles me too.

I really liked Dancer in the Dark, but I absolutely hated Dogville, and those are the only two of his I've seen.

I do like Von Trier but I wouldn't list him as one of the 10 best Directors working today. He is bleak but if I want good bleak I go to Michael Haneke or bad bleak to Michael Bay (films very own Antichrist!)
