Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

When Ingmar Bergman died in 07 this question became less cut and dry.

I think it comes down to Werner Herzog, Jean Luc Godard,Martin Scorsese and Francic Ford Coppola.

In my opinion Werner Herzog is the greatest living filmmaker.

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

Out of those four, only Herzog continues to make movies that are as good or close to as good as his classics. But I would argue Godard did more to advance the language and artistic content of film than any other filmmaker in the past 50 years.

Terrence Malick, Wim Wenders, or Takashi Miike.

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

Takashi Miike is most certainly among the greatest living filmmakers. Wim Wenders can be hit and miss, imo.

Other filmmakers not already mentioned that I'd put on the list: Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch (Inland Empire notwithstanding), Pedro Almodovar, Kenneth Anger, Matthew Barney, Roman Polanski, and the Coen Brothers, off the top of my head.

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

Michelangelo Antonioni & Ingmar Bergman died the same day.
So the world lost 2 of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
As for your question, I say the greatest living filmmaker is Jean-Luc Godard.

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

Godard is the greatest living filmmaker simply for his 60s output alone, although I feel no urge to see his more recent films as they're released.

Scorsese is a close 2nd and is the greatest living American filmmaker by a wide margin.

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

I think the OP forgot many guys who are alive. And I for sure as hell don't consider Coppola great anymore. Talented? Yeah, for sure. But his output of quality is SEVERELY lopsided.

I'll agree thought that Scorsese is the best American we got.

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

My opinion, two guys who are alive and still producing quality work...

David Fincher and Chris Nolan.

Heaven forbid some of the other guys see this but I'm sure you'll get flack for bringing him up.

Fincher is truly great. And I would add to the list of greatest filmmakers for sure.

Nolan...I REALLY REALLY like his growth as a filmmaker w/ each film but I dunno about where he would be ranked. He's a solid director for sure. But there's nothing I see where I could say only Nolan could do it, in terms of filmmaking. I know that sounds dickish of me to say. I'm kind of uncomfortable saying that as well cuz I like his films (still can't get past Following though). While I can tell his style and manner of storytelling, it's his filmmaking that makes me wonder about his rank. He's one of the best working filmmakers we have but how great is he? I dunno.

Nolan has his own distinct style that separates him the same as any great and notable director. (Except for maybe Insomnia) You really think anyone could have done Inception, Memento or the latest Batman films? Come on now...With that said, my vote still goes to Scorsese. Although I greatly look forward to Nolan's and QT's future projects.

I am. Except, I haven't made any movies yet. Anyone care to donate a couple million bucks so I can prove my point?

I agree, Nolan seems to catch flack for doing movies simply because his last few have been popular. All his movies have been enjoyable to some extent if you ask me and he's grown as a filmmaker with each film. I wouldn't say he's the best around right now but he's one of the better ones around at the moment.

My vote goes to Scorsese as well, but Tarantino, the Coen's, Speilberg, Lynch, and many others mentioned in this thread deserve mention too.
