Even though you know it's a movie...these scenes affect you.

I caught the beginning of Cliffhanger the other day. It's been years since I've seen it, but the opening scene where the girl slips out of his hand always freaks me right out. The way they shoot it, the way she falls, the way he would have to watch her the whole way down and can't do anything. And then the aftermath of having to live with dropping your best friend's girlfriend. I get anxiety just thinking about it.

Most things in movies don't affect me much since I always know it's fake. But I've had nightmares about situations like that and it always makes me feel a little sick to my stomach.

What movie scenes stick out to you?

The Pianist.
The scene where the boy crawling under the fence gets beaten (or stomped to death).

The scene in Saving Private Ryan where the guy gets stabbed near the end and is pleading with the German to stop.

Saving Private Ryan
Spoiler:
Private Mellish slowly being stabbed by the German. As painful as it is to watch it makes it even worse adding the fact the Private Upham was just sitting on the stairs too scared to do anything to help.

A truly difficult scene to watch play out.

Edit: Damnit Rob!

Damn, I hate that scene. Thought of it when I read the thread but figured if I didn't mention it I would forget about it. Thanks, guys.

I cringe whenever the dog gets it in a horror movie. People can die left and right in a flick but the moment the dog gets killed I get upset.

The end of Best of the Best - where after defeating the US team, the Korean player hobbles over and gives the "accept me as your brother" speech. Tears me up every time.

I see no need to put spoilers on this, but beware...

Another scene in Saving Private Ryan that gets me is when Vin Diesel gets sniped. He's just lying there dying about 10 feet away from the rest of the guys. They all want to rush out there and help him but they know they'll get killed too. Wade even tries to go out there but gets held back. It would suck to just sit there and watch your buddy die when you're so close and MAYBE you could do something but you know you can't go to him.

By the way Upham is biggest tool in the history of cinema. I hate that frickin guy.

Re: Even though you know it's a movie...these scenes affect you.

Surprised nobody mentioned the Lion King when Mufasa was killed. That scene still affects me to this day even though it's a Disney movie (and a cartoon at that).
Another one would have to be the opening scene in Law Abiding Citizen where his family was raped and murdered. It troubles me even more knowing that there are people out there doing this shit and some may even be getting away with it (some suspects still not captured to this day), unlike lions plotting to kill their own brother by working with hyenas. I'm glad he got back at that monster however it won't bring his wife and daughter back, that scene really upset me even moreso alone compared to every other movie I watched.

Some of the traps from the Saw films make me squirm every time I see them. In particular, the opening of Saw III where J. LaRose has all those metal hooks in him.

Yeah that scene always gets me and I've seen the movie at least 10 times.

I'm going to add in the ending of Terminator 2 when Arnold says "I know now why you cry but it is something I could never do" Probably the most heart breaking scene in any Cameron movie, hit me harder than "wake up Jack"

I never saw past Saw III but many of the traps in III were pretty gruesome. Saw I was actually very tame. Saw II was pretty tame too from what I can remember. III had the hook dude. The pig guts thing just about made me barf. The frozen chick with the water was brutal and the dude at the end was brutal too.

I started to watch Saw IV but after the initial trap with the one guy that couldn't talk and the other guy that couldn't see I asked myself "Self...why are you watching this shit?" and turned it off.

One of the three main characters (pictured below) in this 2002 movie from Hong Kong (directed by Corey Yuen) dies in the middle. It comes out of left field and leaves you in shock. I just have to think of this scene and...I'm gone.

The ending to that when we saw it in theaters was horrible for the theater. Rememeber..this was a time when dads took their kids to see R rated action flicks w/ Arnold and it was fine. It was Arnold. Well...I and the several other kids in the movie started crying when he went down. I'm pretty sure no father expected or knew how to react to that. I was so sad to see Arnold go like that. Still kinda sad now when I see it cuz I remember what I felt about it.

Jaws

Spoiler:
Quint dying by having a shark eat him is the worst way for him to go. At least he got a blade and tried to go out fighting.

The above mentioned scene from Saving Private Ryan is another good example. In fact, it's quite similar as the individual getting killed is having it done so by the worst kind of killer possible. For having a reputation as taking the "safe way out" with his movies, Spieberg really gets rough in the death department.

The assasination of Murphy in the first Robocop is very hard to watch, especially on the unrated version. The way Bodicker toys with him before blasting away made it very hard for me to like Kurtwood Smith on That 70s Show.

Re: Even though you know it's a movie...these scenes affect you.

Mel Gibson flicks bring pretty of cringy worthy moments

Braveheart - When Wallace takes the ball and chain to the head and smashes it in. It is such a fast cut which makes it all the more realistic.

Apocalypto - the scene where the captive's necks are tied to a long pole, and one of them falls off the cliffs strangling the others, oh man
