I got a very good deal (maybe) on a Denon AVR-87 receiver, the only problem is it was an open box and unfortunately didn't come with the remote or the instructions. Hopefully some of you guys can help me out with a few questions I have before I make my decision whether or not to keep this.
1. Am I screwed without the remote? I know you can only tune the radio through the remote but that's not a big deal, I wouldn't use it much anyway.
2. I have a One For All Cinema 7 remote, will I be able to do most of the functions with this? (Does anyone know the 4 digit code for this receiver, it would save me alot of searching for the manual )
3. How do I change the optical/coaxial input? It's set for optical right now and I want to switch it...
I like this receiver, it sounds much better, and costs less, than the one that I was using (a sony STRDE-445 which I only have two days left to return) and I'd like to keep it but I won't if there's a lot that I can't do with the remote.
Thanks,
Evan

The AVR87 is the AVR1800 in OEM/Sears clothing. Don't be misled by inflated power spec's. The 87 is a 75watt receiver w/ 0.05% THD 20-20000 Hz, just like the 1800. Same number of inputs, features, ...
Although this page doesn't show up on Denon's site, here a product sheet:
http://www.del.denon.com/catalog/pdfs/avr87.pdf
For a manual, just get an manual for a AVR1800.
I think the Cinema 7 will do almost all of the 1800's commands. Codes 0160 and 0004. At the bottom of this popular Cinema 7 FAQ site is a list of 1800/2800/3300 commands you can program on the Cinema 7 and how to do it:
http://ampersand.hypermart.net/one_for_all_cinema_7_faq.htm#[3.21]
I used a Cinema 7 on a 3300 and 2800 for a few months w/no problems. The 87/1800 should have no problems.

quote:<HR>How do I change the optical/coaxial input?<HR>
You need the System set up command:
device 0004
adv. code 234
This should open an on screen menu. One of the menu pages has the digital input assignments. You need cursor commands to navigate through the menu. The FAQ's sheet have these.
BTW, the tuner commands are listed as well.

Thanks! I really do want to keep this receiver and it really sucked when I thought I wouldn't be able to use it witout the remote. You don't happen to know anywhere to download a copy of the manual do you? The Denon site only doesn't have the 1800 listed with a manual.
Thanks again, I'm feeling a lot better now.

Unfortunately no. Denon started listing PDF manuals w/the 3300 and up.
You can ask other forum members to send you a copy.
You can go to a local dealer and either ask
to borrow a 1800 manual (low chance of success, but who knows - maybe you'll get a nice guy).
"Buy" (aka demo) a 1800 from a local dealer. Copy the manual. Return the unit. While you're at it, you can learn commands to the C7 that you don't want to program.
Order a 87/1800 manual from Denon parts.
Probably less than $50, but more than $10.

BEC-
Thanks for all your help, I think I've got everything working now. I managed to program my remote (I didn't even know it could do all that ), get into the setup, switch the dvd input and basically do everything I needed to - without your help I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to keep this receiver. Thanks again, back to playing with my new receiver.
