Can receivers be ranked according to quality? Can one put certain receivers into a lower, middle, and upper echelon? I asked a audio equipment salesman about the various categories of equipment and he said there were the following categories:
mass-market, mid hi-fi, hi-hi, high-end, and esoteric.

I know this subject may be completely moot and subjective, but SO many other items we purchase neatly fall into these categories. For example, cars.

Economy: Hyundai, Yugo
Standard: Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, etc.
Mid luxury: Honda, Toyota, Cadillac, Acura, Infinity
Luxury: BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche
Super-luxury: Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Lambourghini(?)

Can the same be said of speakers?

Sure why not.
Price is usually a rule of thumb to look at too.
Hyundai & Yugo are/were the cheapest possible cars you could buy. In the electronics & computer terms, we call this Craptron. Basically any company selling cheap stuff nobody ever heard of.
Moving on to better stuff usually means costs a bit more.
Just break it down like this.
Sells @ KMart,Walmart,etc (AudioVox)
Sells @ Cicuit City (Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood)
Sells @ Audio & TV only stores (Higher end Pioneer Elite, Sony ES, Onkyo, etc)
Sells @ little shops that carry nothing but McIntosh, B & O, Velodyne
Stores that don't stock anything and send a guy out to your house and he designs the whole shebang for you and custom installs racks & wires & everything
Check out www.evenfalla.com I've been in the demo room and it's astounding!

Dudes! Stop dissin' AudioVox and Yugo! They rule.

BTW, it's been long since passed that Hyundai has surpassed GM, Dodge, and Ford in terms of reliability. In terms of luxury, however...ummm...well...

I guess the mass-market stuff are the stuff you see at Best Buy and Circuit City (with a couple of exceptions, I suppose). I'd break it down like this:

Lo-Fi... would be stuff you find at Radio Shack or stuff you've never heard of but find at Sears or other department stores.
Mass Market... I'd go with Sony, JVC, Pioneer, Philipps, Kenwood.
Slightly above but still can be found at most places... Yamaha's mass market models, Harman Kardan, Technics, Onkyo, Sherwood.
Mid Hi-Fi...Yamaha's good stuff, Denon, Marantz, NAD, Pioneer Elite, high end Onkyo.
High End... Random stuff most people including myself have never seen or heard, but are always in those stereo magazines. At this price point, I'd rather go Amp-Preamp than receiver.

As for speakers, there's a zillion brands. Lo-Fi...see above.
Mass Market...JBL, Bose, Infinity, Polk, Yamaha, whatever's at Circuit City and Best Buy.
Higher... Look in the magazines or your local good audio store.

And yes, Koobird, it's all subjective. So my opinion counts as little as the next guy's.
