70's film about teens and divorced parents?

Hello all,

I would love your help to identify a film that I saw back in the 80s. I believe it was filmed in the 70s and it takes place in New York City. It about two teens who strike up a friendship after dealing with the divorce of their parents. They basically run around the city causing havoc. It is also possible that their parents are dating. The only dialogue I remember is that one of the teens tells her friend that if your parents offer to take you out to dinner, and you can pick any place you want, to pick a restraunt that you hate, because they will like tell you that they are getting a divorce.

Anybody here know what the heck I'm talking about?

I think you're talking about either Rivals (1972) or Rich Kids (1979), both of which have some similarity to your description.

Were these two friends male or female?

I'm guessing Times Square, as well. There's a Gary Numan song in it.

AH! Rich Kids! That's it! Thanks so much! You have solved one of the longest mysteries for me...now if I could only track it down at my local library

Glad to help. The DVD is a tad expensive.

I saw it on TV 6-12 months ago. Not bad. Rivals, on the other hand, is just plain bizarre, but it occurred to me as fitting the summary posted by the OP.

I remember Robert Klein talking about this movie (Rivals) in one of his routines. He had been asked to do a nude scene in the film and, at first, he was okay with it. He got to thinking and realized that on the movie screen (pre-multiplex days) a hair on his ass would look like a sequoia redwood. He did the movie with his clothes on.

They exchanged that for a creepy scene in which Scott Jacoby and a young girl undress in front of each other.
