Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

So, I am looking for the power of DVDtalk to help solve a debate that I have had with my cousin. I feel that 2009 was the better year for theatrical releases, while he contends that 2010 is superior. He has a love for INCEPTION, SOCIAL NETWORK, and SHUTTER ISLAND that put 2010 on top due to the greatness of those three releases alone. I contend that 2009 was a better year because it was much deeper top to bottom, and there were more movies that got me to the theater in 2009.

Here were my favorites in no particular order.

2009
Best Worst Movie
District 9
Avatar
UP
Inglorious BAsterds
Watchmen
Public Enemies
Cloudy with a chance....
Hurt Locker
Zombieland
Where the Wild Things Are
Drag me to Hell
Star Trek
The Hangover
500 days of Summer
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Adventurreland
Ponyo
A Serious Man
The Informant
Extract
Moon
Brothers Bloom
I love you, Man
Black Dynamite
House of the Devil
The Crazies (moved to 2010)
Dead Snow
In the Loop
Coraline
Let the right one in

2010
Shutter Island
Inception
Kick-ass
Splice
Toy Story 3
How to Train Your Dragon
Scot Pilgrim v the World
Pirana 3d
Machete
The Town
Social Network
Jackass 3d
127 Hours
I love you Phillip Morris
Blue Valentine
There once was an Island
True Grit
Black Swan
The Crazies
Expendables
Preadators
A-team

So I now pose the question to you guys. Which year do you think is better for releases?

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

Sorry, it took me some time to get the links to the release lists for 2009 and 2010. With an average of .11 posts a day on the forum it took me a while to get it right. I am just glad I didn't screw up the poll.

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

These last 2 years are the lowest attendance I've had at the movies this century.
Which means both years suck for me.

Yep, looked it up and it came out in February.

To vote in the poll, I went with 2010 but mostly by default (for Inception and Toy Story 3), though '09 did have Star Trek. Either way both years weren't great, just good.

2010 for me, easily. Inception, True Grit, Black Swan, and Kick-Ass seal it for me, and I still need to see 127 Hours.

Just based on the lists here, I'm going to distill them down to the movies I saw and really liked:

2009 wins it handily. Even if I add in a few more 2010 movies I like (such as Four Lions, Harry Potter, and Iron Man 2) 2010 also had way more disappointments (Expendables, Tron, Inception, Monsters, Splice, etc.), making my general enjoyment of the year much lower.

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

I said 2010, because the list of films I loved is longer than 2009's list. Also, I still have about 10 films to watch from 2010, which will make that list even longer.

2009 (12 films):

The Hurt Locker, Up in the Air, A Serious Man, In the Loop, Inglourious Basterds, The White Ribbon, District 9, Moon, (500) Days of Summer, Star Trek, Drag Me to Hell, Fantastic Mr. Fox

2010 (16 films):

Black Swan, The Social Network, Inception, Dogtooth, True Grit, Toy Story 3, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Winter's Bone, Animal Kingdom, A Prophet, The Fighter, The Town, The Kids Are All Right, The Secret in Their Eyes, Scott Pilgrim, Restrepo (+7 films I will probably love: 127 Hours, The King's Speech, Blue Valentine, Waiting for Superman, Let Me In, Inside Job, Another Year)

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

Geez, I thought this was a terrible year for movies at first, but looking at that list, the number of movies I think I'll revisit in the future from this year (Tron, Scott Pilgrim, The Social Network, Inception, Kick-Ass, The Town ) just about beats those from 2009 (Star Trek, Watchmen, An Education, Where The Wild Things Are)

Each year was full of disappointments (Avatar, The Expendables), but 2010 just barely wins it I think.

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

It seems like things are split quite evenly, I thought that this might be the case. It seems as though if you thought very highly of INCEPTION and THE SOCIAL NETWORK than 2010 stood out more for you. I did enjoy those but there are so many more in 2009 that I want to revisit soon.

Thanks for the input so far!!

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

2009 highlights: Star Trek, 500 days of Summer, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Up in the Air, Let the right one in, Inglourious Basterds, Watchmen

2010 highlights: Inception, Kick-ass, How to Train Your Dragon, Scott Pilgrim v the World, Social Network, 127 Hours

Damn, its nearly a tie for me. I'd say the double whammy of Inception and Social Network give 2010 the edge.

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

2009's movies were a lot more fun (Star Trek, Drag Me to Hell, Inglourious Basterds). 2010 had better "serious" films: Animal Kingdom, Inception, Winter's Bone, The Social Network, The American... and then you've two good 4+ hr European biopics about criminals.

I haven't seen Carlos yet but really liked CHE, which I tack on to 2009. I saw it in Auckand with my brother

Thanks to everyone who voted, I think that I have a large enough sampling to help my argument.

Re: Better Year for Movies: 2009 or 2010

I didnt see alot of films in 2010 but i hated Avatar less than Inception so I will go with 2009, plus I LOVED Watchmen and the only stand outs this year for me were Scott Pilgrim, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Kick-Ass and How To Train Your Dragon. I wanted to love Machete because my favorite film EVER is Grindhouse but it just didnt hit the high mark I had set for it and The Expendables also didnt WOW me as much as I thought it would.
