Oscar telecast takes the 'SNL' route with James Franco and Anne Hathaway
From LA Times
In its attempt to lure younger viewers, the film academy forgoes a comedian host in favor of two actors with 'Saturday Night Live' credentials.
If it's good enough for "Saturday Night Live," it's good enough for … the Academy Awards?
That's the hope, anyway, of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which announced Monday that James Franco and Anne Hathaway will be co-hosting the 83rd Academy Awards. With respective ages of 32 and 28, the two actors are among the youngest hosts for the iconic award show. While both are accomplished, adventurous and well-regarded actors, their primary job qualification for hosting a live variety show is their experience toplining "SNL."
"We're not going to require them to perform six to eight skits playing different characters live in front of an audience, but if you can handle 'Saturday Night Live,' then that's a great indication of your readiness as an Oscar host," says Bruce Cohen, co-producer with Don Mischer of the show, which will air Feb. 27.

Don't see why it really matters. Besides the opening comedy bits, its not like the hosts need to be funny. They just say what award is coming up next.

Pretty odd pair for the Academy Awards, but they are probably looking to get younger viewers to tune in.

Eh, doesn't really matter who hosts anyway and I like both Franco and Hathaway. Although it would be weird if either one won an award that night.

You want to know how to attract younger viewers? Dont have a typical awards show.. Unless theyre going to adopt the MTV movie awards style, I dont care if they put Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus up there, younger viewers arent going to watch, and youve already alienated your core audience.

Over/under on the number of...
...nudity jokes? I say there will be ten.
...amputation jokes? Five
...jokes about the youth of the hosts? Two
...soap opera jokes? One.

If they really want ratings up:
- 2 hours long (less would be better but I'm being realistic)
- Best Actor/Actress. Best Director, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actors, Best Special Effects, Best Composer, In Memorium and only an opening video and a monologue from the host
- One "special" performance - for example, I thought the "choir that did all the foley sounds" from a few years ago was neat. Something creative like that.
THAT'S IT.

Wrong again, Draven! The winner of "Best Short Documentary" deserves a world-wide audience so he or she can drone on for several minutes about how the Holocaust was bad.

The only time the short film awards have been interesting was the year that Cletus VanDamme ended up on stage.

Maybe they should institute a system where the best actor and actress from the previous year host the show. That would be interesting.
