favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)

I know 'musical' can mean three different things, and that's how I'll ask the question:

A) what are your favorite 'music' moment 'cue'/specific scenes in terms of score, specifically written for the movie?

B) what are your favorite scenes where the music is sourced from an album?

C) what are your favorite scenes that features song and/or dance number written for the movie:

(and even though I made the question sound like you have to one singular answer, you can add as many as you want)

A)
1 - Bell scene from 1492: Conquest of Paradise
2 - departure of E.T., John Williams at his best, the whole scene didn't even have to have the dialogue and the emotions would have been equally powerful
3 - opening murder from Suspiria
4 - 'Don Giovanni' scene from Amadeus
5- Lily singing to the unicorn - Legend
6 - train scene across the water - Spirited Away
7 - opening eagle flying scene - Rescuers Down Under
8 - chase and asteroid scene - Empire Strikes Back

B)
1 - 'Sweet Harmony' - Strange Days
2 - 'Perfect Day' - Trainspotting
3 - 'Cosmic Castaway' by Electrasy - Titan AE
4 - 'Your Song' - Moulin Rouge!
5 - 'Layla' - Goodfellas
6 - 'Carmina Burana' - scene from Excalibur

C)
1 - 'Cool' - West Side Story
2 - 'And the Money Kept Rolling In' - Evita
3 - 'Make them Laugh' - Singin' in the Rain
4 - 'Up There' - South Park: The Movie
5 - 'Pinball Wizard' - Tommy
6 - 'You Can't Stop The Beat' - Hairspray (2007)
7 - 'Bright Eyes' - Watership Down

I am pretty sure that Mozart didn't write "Don Giovanni" for the film Amadeus.

My answer to C is Veruca Salt singing "I Want It Now" in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

in terms of music used for Watchmen I thought the use of 'Halleujah' during the love song was tacky and outright bad. The song was better integrated for 'Shrek'

touche actually considering none of the musical moments were in the play version, 'Amadeus' ... the movie, was far more visceral and the 'Don Giovanni' scene packed a wallop: the wall falling down, the winged demons jumping and flying at the conclusion: 'wow'! The other scene where Amadeus finds his muse (The Queen of the Night) for 'The Magic Flute', I thought the editing that Forman chose of her complaining to Mozart that merges her into the opera is perfect.

re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)

I'll probably keep editing my post but these are the first that pop into my head

A. Don't know the official name but it's the cue used in Blown Away whenever Bridges is investigating the bombs.
Oboe/Strings/Chant cue that plays throughout HULK, particularly when the Hulk is looking at the desert flower.
Duduk cue when Michael Lonsdale speaks of the 47 Ronin in the movie Ronin.
Arpeggiated sequence at the end of Wolf.
Piano piece that plays while Lars and Margo bowl on their first date in Lars and the Real Girl.
Ry Cooder - Sanctuary that plays during the end credits of Last Man Standing, over the deserted road against the sunset.
Intro sequence done by Jack Nitzsche for Cutter's Way; a droning piano/string/mariachi horn melody against a slow-framed parade.
Airport sequence done by John Carpenter and Alan Howarth for Big Trouble in Little China
Union Station to 710 car chase done by Wang Chung for To Live And Die In LA
Bernard Herrmann piece Love Music during the twirl scene at Novak's apartment in Vertigo.
Hanz Zimmer piece from the ending of the The Pledge
Basil Poledouris' Lights On from the airplane desert escape sequence in Cherry 2000
Angelo Badalamenti's piece "Laurens Walking" as Richard Farnsworth departs on his journey in The Straight Story.
John Williams' piece during the farewell address to the White House staff in Nixon.

B. Suien - Kitaro in the dream sequence from Manhunter
The "Blue Bayou - Linda Ronstadt to Self Destruction part II - NIN to Clair de Lune - Debussy" sequence used during Denzel Washington's depressed state in Man On Fire
Close to You - The Carpenters(Cover) used during the jack-in-the-box scene in Mirrormask
Satisfaction - Rolling Stones used in the quarry shootup in Raw Deal
Satisfaction - Devo in the daughter hostage sequence from Casino
Third Movement of Brahms Violin Concerto to punctuate the end of There Will Be Blood
I Want To Be Bad by Helen Kane lipsynched by Bernadette Peters in Pennies from Heaven(1982)
Mamou Two Step - Lawrence Walker(Covered by David Mansfield) used during the roller rink dance/stomp in Heaven's Gate
Wait - Wang Chung end credits "headlights through Southern CA" sequence from To Live and Die In LA
Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood from the Holly Body porn movie sequence in Body Double

Menina E Moca - Portuguese folk song covered by Milla Jovovich from the brothel intro in The Claim

C. The Mirror Song - Thomas Dolby from Toys
Intros to Vacation and European Vacation set to Holiday Road
Don't Turn Away - Lea Thompson version from Howard the Duck
Dancin - Olivia Newton John and The Tubes from Xanadu

in regards to Kitaro - there is an absolutely beautiful music cue near the end of Oliver Stone's Heaven & Earth that is somehow NOT included on the CD

B) Blue Velvet's "In Dreams" scene.

C) The most recent example that made an impression on me was Beth Rowley's "You've Got Me Wrapped Around Your Little Finger" in An Education.

speaking of Ralph Bakshi, there's a great jazzy rendition of 'Scarborough Fair' that is featured in his Heavy Traffic, that is a definate highlight of the movie.

and in turn the whole Tarna episode in Heavy Metal sequence could have just been Elmer Bernstein's wonderful score alone - minus the few moments of dialogue. The score is the highlight of that entire sequence

and in continuing the theme of animated movies, while Disney's Pocohontas was critically maligned (for the most part) I think that the score is the film's best asset, notably the end theme when Pocahontas is watching John Smith leave on the ship - the movie builds and builds to such a crescendo, it a emotional sad/happy finale that the music beautifully compliments.

Re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)

Limiting myself to three each:

A) what are your favorite 'music' moment 'cue'/specific scenes in terms of score, specifically written for the movie?
Once Upon a Time in The West "L'America di Jill" and then the same melody in "Finale" - Edda Dell'Orso can make me cry like a bitch.
Ichi the Killer - rooftop battle, where the music threatens to distort your perception of time.
Get Carter "Carter Takes A Train" - harpsichord, double bass, tablas; simple but awesome.

B) what are your favorite scenes where the music is sourced from an album?
Fucking Åmål "I Want to Know What Love Is" - "We're so fucking cool."
Bad Lieutenant "Signifying Rapper" - Schoolly D >>>>>> Led Zeppelin. No more fucking rock n' roll.
Stranger Than Paradise ""I Put a Spell on You" - self-explanatory

C) what are your favorite scenes that features song and/or dance number written for the movie:
It's Always Fair Weather "I Shouldn't Have Come (The Blue Danube)" - a musical number for three conflicting inner monologues.
The Sound of Music "Do-Re-Mi" - I am a sucker for musical numbers that incorporate jumps in time and/or space.
The Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella "Tell Him Anything (But Not That I Love Him)" - one of those soaring fairy tale tearjerkers, but with a twist.

George McFly finally punching Biff in Back to the Future

B) Don't Stop Me Now in Shaun of the Dead

C) The most recent one i loved was the dance number in 500 Days of Summer

I was thinking of that one too. It shows up a lot in the movie, but the best use of it (To me, at least) was at the very end.

C) It's got to be the Trolley Song from Meet Me in St Louis. Just explosively up beat. Possibly the best pop performance of the 20th century. And I'm not at all a Garland freak.

Re: favorite 'musical' movie moments (3-part question)

I'll have to think about this some more -- I know there are definitely specific moments that make me want to straight-up applaud -- but my recent viewing of Back to the Future was yet another reminder of how much I love that score. If I had to single out at least a section of the movie, if not a moment, all of the music once Marty pulls up to the clock tower after the dance through to when he's back in 1985 is great.

I have to admit, one of my top answers for A) would be the "Battle of the Mounds" sequence in Conan the Barbarian.
