I own a DVD player with DTS decoder, but I have not yet purchased any DTS discs. I was wondering what happens when I play a DTS disc in a player without DTS decoding.

Every DVD must contain a Dolby Digital track, it doesn't matter if it's mono, stereo, pro-logic, or 5.1. To my knowledge, I think all DTS discs have a DD2.0 track, therefore, you'll get stereo.
However, with a DTS cd, which is not required to have an alternate sound format (it would be PCM in the case of a cd), you'll get nothing.

Most DVDs have a DD 2.0 track so you will get prologic surround sound.
