X-Files 3 possibly on the way
David Duchovny says a script is being written. Maybe.
In true X-Files fashion, nobody will confirm or deny, but somebody knows the answer...
If it is, it's just in time for the big alien invasion of 2012.
Maybe they'll even call it X-Files 3D...

I'd like for there to be another one, but the 2nd one bombed at the box office so badly that I'll be amazed if it gets made.

...that there will be a third movie, but as dhmac said, the second one just didn't seem to perform well enough for the studio to back a third.
But we really do need a resolution to the mythology. The alien invasion is coming and I want to see Mulder and Scully stop it, or fail to stop it, whichever the case may be. Of course we'd need Mitch Pileggi back as Walter Skinner. And I know he wasn't the most popular among some X-Files fans, but I'd love to see Robert Patrick as John Doggett in it as well. Having Mulder, Scully, Skinner, and Doggett face the alien invasion would be pretty great.
And I think that this one would fair better at the box office. They could promote it as the final movie, what we've all been waiting for, etc. The problem with the second movie was that it was more like one of the monster of the week episodes, which were usually good, but were nowhere near as good as the mythology episodes. That and there's no way it was going to live up to the hype when it wasn't the movie we've all been waiting for (the alien invasion).

According to wikipedia, IWTB had a budget of $30m and grossed $68m.
It did $20m domestic box office and did $48m in foreign markets, according to box office mojo.
I think that a better movie -- or at least the kind of X-Files movie people want to see -- might do a much better domestic gross than that. The question is, would Fox be willing to take a chance on it with the domestic take lower than the budget?

I'd love to see a big invasion/resolution movie, but the budget would probably be significantly higher.
For the record, I did like the second movie.

I hope they make this movie, but I hope they finally answer the questions left hanging by the series. Pissed me off when I Want To Believe went off on a tangent, like a double length X-Files episode unrelated to anything, instead of using that time, effort, and film to finally answer the questions left about the impending invasion. I want to see how Mulder and Scully beat the aliens (and probably damn near die in the process). They could even bring The Lone Gunmen back (say their deaths were staged)... -kd5-

I don't think they should address all of the dangling plot threads... frankly, I'd be happy if I never heard about the Super Soldiers again.

The first X-Files movie was IMO pretty mediocre: a 2-hour episode of the TV show, but nowhere near as good as some of the show's better episodes. I never bothered with the 2nd movie. At this point, just do a FOX miniseries or something if they want to "wrap things up". The whole dynamic and style was much better suited to the small screen anyhow.

Chris Carter & company may be writing a script, but in related news, a ton of other people on the internet are also writing X-Files stories...doesn't mean any of them will see life. If Fox put any money in a new project, they should really push Carter aside and put someone like Vince Gilligan on it.
People do talk about the decent overseas box office of the last movie, but the problem is that I think Hollywood sees overseas markets as a few years behind the curve, kind of like the middle of the US. Add to that, that they pretty much killed off the good will of people that came out to pay to see an X-Files movie with that last effort (that I admit played better on TV at home).
But yeah, 2 movies, both sub-par, why try for more?

Re: X-Files 3 possibly on the way
I'm sure Fox knows what a mistake it was to bury a low-budget sci-fi/genre movie the week after "The Dark Knight" with almost no promotion just like Fox knows how profitable and popular the previous movie, the DVD sales, the re-runs etc. have been in the years since the show went off the air. There's no denying the movie bombed (at least in the US) but Fox isn't going to use that as the sole determining factor in regards to the future of "The X-Files".

Re: X-Files 3 possibly on the way
I would welcome a new film if it meant they could end things (theatrically, at least) on a higher note. I thought the first film was a good episode that happened to play in theaters, the second wasn't so good. I would love to see a third that follows the mythology, brings in Doggett (I thought he was fantastic), adds in some old bits for fans and gives us a better sendoff.

Make the 3rd one and have the aliens butt rape Mulder and Skully having her head chopped off. Make the aliens win and take over the Earth. The End.
Great movie. Will make loads of money at the box office. No 3-D.

Re: X-Files 3 possibly on the way
The last movie was extremely disappointing IMHO. I'd only be up for a third one if the reviews were strong, including the fans reactions, and if they pretended the second movie didn't happen. Or at least if it's barely acknowledged.
I seriously doubt the writers know how to resolve the Alien Invasion storyline and the last of the mythology issues bugging fans in a satisfying way. Still -- it might be nice just to see them try.
