Piranha: 2D & 3D Editions -----> 1/11/2011
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that, on January 11, 2011, it will release Piranha on Blu-ray, in two editions: a 2D Blu-ray and a 3D Blu-ray which also includes the 2D version but reportedly misses out on some special features. This Weinstein Company production, directed by Alexandre Aja, features "buckets of blood, gratuitous nudity and can't-miss cameos by Hollywood legends Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd, plus horror maestro Eli Roth."
Note that when it opened in theaters, this movie was originally titled Piranha 3D, with "3D" as part of the title, but for the home video release SPHE has decided to drop the 3D tag, probably to avoid confusing the public.
Special features include:
2D version
* Filmmaker commentary
* Deleted scenes with optional commentary
* Deleted storyboard sequences
* 10 Behind-the-scenes featurettes
* Storyboard gallery
* Trailer & TV spots
3D version
* Filmmaker commentary
* 10 Behind-the-scenes featurettes

Re: Piranha: 2D & 3D Editions -----> 1/11/2011
I think there must be a mistake in the press release - since they have said the 3D version is 2 discs, one disc being 3D, the other 2D, wouldn't it just make sense to have the 2D version be the same disc as the standalone release? Of course, studios do things that don't make sense all the time so the missed out features could be true but I think this has to be just an error in the wording...

so I assume the film didn't lose any gore for it's R-rating. I would have thought the home video release might have been unrated - only one scene seemed toned down.

Different info:
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced 1-disc DVD ($28.95), 1-disc Blu-ray ($34.95), and 2-disc Blu-ray 3D ($39.95) editions of Piranha for January 11th. The only extra material on the DVD release will be a filmmaker commentary, and 5 behind-the-scenes featurettes. The 1-disc Blu-ray will include all of the DVD features, plus deleted scenes with optional commentary, deleted storyboard sequences, 5 additional behind-the-scenes featurettes, the Piranha 3D trailer, and TV Spots. The only listed extra material for the 2-disc Blu-ray 3D release is the commentary, 10 behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a 2D version of the film playable on all existing Blu-ray players. We don't have the package artwork yet, but we'll bring you that shortly. Stay tuned.

By the announcement, the two-disc set should theoretically have the 2D version as one disc and the 3D version as the second disc? However, by that logic, it should contain all of the extras; unless Sony goes the route and makes a specific disc for the 2D version that's only available the 3D set. Blah blah blah.
This is why I prefer Disney's combo packs. 2D and 3D versions are given their own room to breathe on separate discs plus DVD and digital copies for shits and giggles.

Unless it's a short film or with no extras we will see a lot of these 2D/3D combo packs. Find by me as I'll sell the 2D version the 3D versions wont even load unless you have a 3DTV/BD player.

Is there any reason to buy the 3D version if you don't have a 3D TV and player and don't plan on getting one for years if ever?
I'm not even sure what this is. Wasn't Coraline a 3D movie, because it came with the glasses? I didn't use them and found the film to look wonderful but what's the difference here?

I still don't understand why the 2-Disc 3D-BD pack has fewer extras than the single disk 2D only BD. Theoretically, disc 1 of the pack would be the 3D version. Then why wouldn't disc 2 just be the same as the stand alone 2D version being sold.
Are they really pressing another version of the disc, with fewer extras, just for the combo pack?

I loved the movie but the 3D was pretty bad and I don't have or want a 3D TV so I'm in for the regular version.

I mean, I am totally not seeing 3D in my future, but for $1, if I knew I was getting everything that came with the 2D version and the 3D version probably wasn't ever going to get used, the single dollar would be worth spending on the off chance I change my mind in 5 years and I don't have to buy it again.
Looks like this might be one release I'll need to wait for reviews of before ordering, because no one seems to know.
