DirecTV DVR box makes a lot of noise
I didn't know where to put this question. TV Talk? HD Talk?
Anyway, my DirectTV HD DVR makes a lot of whirring noises, noises that I guess are the hard drive "working". It sounds a little like when a PC is working. My unit does not have a fan. Anyway, it makes this noise all the time. All day long, even when it's off, even when I have all my equipement shut down. And it's hot, like it's on, all the time. It functions fine, but I'm worried this thing is using a lot of electricity. It's 80-90 degrees all day long. Is this normal?
The unit is 6 months old.

Mine have always run hot, and it basically is a computer, so similar noises are to be expected. Also not sure exactly how their warranty system works, but I had one die after about two years and all I had to pay for was shipping on the replacement.

"Off" with these DirecTV DVRs is a very different thing than "off" with something like a DVD player. It may not display the picture, but just like a TiVo: it's always recording the live buffer, receiving data, and recording scheduled programs.
