The Event -- "To Keep Us Safe" -- 09/27/10
By djariya at 2010-09-27
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
Was not blown away by episode 1, but I am intrigued by the premise of the show, so I'm sticking with it until a major disaster strikes.
Evan Katz, who was a writer/producer on 24, officially joins the show as of this episode as showrunner.

Good move by bringing Katz on board. Assuming the network identified issues with the pilot and responded (as opposed to responding to a ratings dip).

Most Pilots are shot without a showrunner attached and Katz was hired by the studio after 24 ended and this was picked up to series.

Is that why one of Jack's old bosses appears to be a new addition in the picture above?
I'll also stick with this for the time being. I haven't watched a lot of pilots, but few interested me and even fewer have really impressed me.

Just finished rewatching the Pilot episode and I've completely changed my mind about it. Thought it was really good. My mistake was flipping between it and the football game last week.
The complicated storytelling style will probably drive away viewers, though.

That was much better. If the premiere had been two hours and we knew all of this from the very first viewing, I think it would have been better received.

Am I the only one that thinks the time jumps, although possibly slightly annoying, aren't confusing whatsoever? How hard is it to differentiate between things that happened "before" and things that are happening "now" especially when a big xx months ago or xx years ago pops up onto the screen?
I liked tonight's episode more than the pilot. I think everybody knew it was going to be either one of two things and I thought it was going to be the other thing. I'm really interested in where this goes, so I definitely hope ratings are good and the show continues.
By the way, I wonder how many other 24 alums are going to show up.

Can't wait for the backtracking. Of the haters that is.
This show certainly isn't afraid to answer questions now is it? A bunch of people said "ALIENS DUH" and while they were right, the show didn't make you wait 20 episodes to give you the obvious, they did it in show #2. Same thing with the agent being one of them. When he was giving blood I was all "Of course he's going to end up being one!". However, I wasn't expecting them to out that 10 seconds later. I just get the feeling that they're not treating the audience as stupid by dangling carrots. It's a nice change of pace for shows like this.

Enjoying it and the time-jumps work for me. I was thinking this is the kind of approach the new "V" should have taken.
Only thing that bugged me is that you'd think him boarding the flight in Florida would have set up all sorts of FBI alarms, but maybe they'll address that. I assume the Feds will at least check out his story and see if he was at least on the flight manifest (although I suppose whomever is behind wiping out all the passengers could doctor that).

Tonight's episode improved on the pilot. The exchange with the FBI agents in the car was rather painful to watch though.

Are most suspected murderers allowed to sit in the back seat of a car by themselves without even a partition between him and the agents in the front seat?

My only complaint was Sean not questioning the FBI agents on how he was able to kill a guy in a room on a cruise that he was apparently not on since they wiped all his info.
How about that fake vein removal.
Although I did at them stating Sean is 5'11". My wife got some pics with Jason Ritter in the press room at Comic-Con and he was only a few inches taller than her. Maybe his sudden growth is....THE EVENT!

A little surprised at all the positive reaction so far to the second episode, which almost felt like a different show in tone from the pilot. I still would lay money they are not aliens, but human time-travelers from the far future who have been genetically engineered to be better than us. But something that mankind does in the present will lead to Earth being unlivable in the future and force the future people to leave the planet. That neatly solves them being both human and off-worlders.
I think it is preposterous that the U.S. government would basically hold them captive for 66 years with apparently no significant understanding of their motives. 1944 looks like it was picked more for the World War II setting than any logical reason. There will definitely be flashbacks set in that period if I had to guess. Picking 1945 would have at least coincided with the dropping of the first atomic bombs.
I will continue to give it a chance mostly because networks give so few opportunities to serialized shows, but let us hope it does not turn into the 24-styled approach to science fiction.

Oddly enough, the vein thing happened life. It reminded me of this true life case:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Schneeberger
or watch the case on Forensic Files:

Wasn't one of the security guards who kidnapped Layla also the same one who tossed Sean around the ship last week?

Re: The Event -- "To Keep Us Safe" -- 09/27/10
Surprisingly I actually liked episode 2 alot.
Maybe I was way too down on the Pilot after reading most of the haters remarks and seeing it on Saturday didn't do me much justice, but I thought this was a really compelling episode.
I liked that it took place literally moments after the Pilot ended and as the Producers/Promos promised alot of questions were indeed answered. The flashbacks worked for me alot more in this episode because they were key puzzle pieces that filled in alot of holes in the Pilot.
I was also a little bugged by how Sean is being blamed for the murder of Ryan Reynolds (sorry I don't remember his name, but he looks like him) There is absolutely no forensic evidence or weapon with Sean's prints that could tie him to the murder.
I also have to assume that Ryan Reynolds and Vicky weren't working together since DB Sweeney stabbed him to death.
^^ The black cruise security guard who kidnapped Laya was also the same guy who escorted Sean off the ship.
BTW, I really liked the flashback scene from 5 years ago when Sean and Layla 1st met. Although he looks exactly the same and his facial hair & hair is exactly the same length.
I have to assume also that Simon Lee is one of "them" after he pulled out that tube from his vein.
The ending was a big WTF? moment
Now I'm hooked. Hopefully the numbers for week 2 will stay good.
