Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Both are prolific actors who've made some great films as well as some interesting career choices.

Who do you think is the better actor?

If Depp had only made this movie, he'd still be better than Norton:

Depp is the superior actor, but I like Norton better.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Edward Norton started really well but seems to have flamed out. Depp's kind of done the opposite. So, Depp.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Norton is one of my favorites, no question I like him better. And I think that down to brass tacks, he might have the edge. But with the roles he takes (or gets), it's hard to vote him over Depp.

Reluctantly, I have to vote Depp.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Depp wins for me by far. I don't think Norton has anywhere near the range that Depp has.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

can't say either draws me to a film

but Depp gets props for his fine work in 21 Jumpstreet
Norton in Rounders is better than anything Depp has ever done
and Depp looses major points for his association with Burton

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

I like both guys, but I'd have to go with Depp based on the question of who's a better actor.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Wait, where's the cut-and-paste IMDB filmography?

I'll vote for Depp, if for no other reason than to infuriate the Tim Burton haters.

He also gave the best performance of either actor IMO in Donnie Brasco. I thought Norton was great in Fight Club, but haven't been drawn to him in anything else. Depp has given a bunch of good performances.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Norton's made far fewer films but...

Primal Fear
The People vs. Larry Flynt
Rounders
Fight Club
American History X
25th Hour
Down in the Valley
Kingdom of Heaven
The Painted Veil

...are examples of an actor completely on top of his game.

As much as I like Depp, who does have more range and has an equal amount of incredible performances, I'm going to give the slight nod to Norton.

Both are great actors.

^Shit, how could I forget about American History X? That is a great performance by Norton. I'll still stand by my Depp pick, though.

Beautifully said. But I swear if the next "Pirates" movie is as bad as the last two, I'm gonna rip that crown off Depp's head and give to Norton.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Norton's the better actor, Depp's the better movie star. Some movies need movie stars, not actors, e.g. the Pirates films and ED WOOD. I'm sure Norton will do a great Willy Loman in "Death of a Salesman" on stage someday. Or George in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" I don't think Depp could do those roles. But Depp can carry a blockbuster to success, which I doubt Norton can, his Hulk film notwithstanding. Depp is also more likable and entertaining. Does Norton ever lighten up?

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

True fact: in 1992, Depp bet Jack Nicholson that he could give the most absurd, over-the-top performances this side of BRIAN BLESSED and still get critical acclaim. Jack tried to pay up after seeing Ed Wood, but Depp told him that was just a practice run.

Norton, on the other hand, still tries to act.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Norton seems bored in all his movies anymore. Depp at least doesn't seem to take himself super seriously.

That said, I think 90s Norton is better than 90s Depp, but 00s Depp beats 00s Norton.

Each film calls for different kinds of acting. Depp is always appropriate in his roles and his films are generally more entertaining than Norton's. They are both great actors, of course, but I haven't got as much entertainment out of Norton in the past few years. So I give the edge to Depp.

I am very interested to see how Depp does in The Rum Diary.

I like Norton more, and wish I could vote for him. But even though I've never been much of a Depp fan, I think he has more range and a better overall body of work.

Depp. Norton is good but there's just something about him that holds me back from saying he's great. Just personnaly enjoy Depp's movies and performances better.

Agreed, I used to be on the Norton bandwagon in the 90's but it feels like he's mailed it in on more then a few occasions recently.

That said, while I like Depp, the "play a quirky character for Tim Burton" thing is getting to the point of annoyance for me.

Re: Johnny Depp or Edward Norton?

Hard to pick because they are 2 of my 3 favorite actors working today. In the end, I went with Depp.
