Hey, maybe I don't have to import the UK disc after all! Hooray, laziness!

Highlander includes a new documentary that's not on the UK disc.

EDIT: Sorry, it seems the documentary is only new to the US and is in the UK BD.

Re: Highlander and Highlander 2 (November 2 and 12, 2010.

Is there any logic to why one is coming out on the 2nd and the second is coming out on the 12th?

Likely a typo/error on Amazon's part, as November 12 is a Friday and other sites/vendors show the release date as November 2.

I think I have 2 or 3 versions of the first on dvd. Anybody know how the UK version is? Worth picking up or wait unit it's in the $9.99 range?

I'm not a big fan of steelbooks but I like the art on my UK disc better so I'll keep that. This would have to come up with much better PQ than the UK disc for me to get it, which I doubt it will. Probably limited by the source. May go with H2 for the guilty pleasure.

Anyone know if Highlander II will be the reedited version? Like the DVD that came out a few years back?

Yeah. If the Highlander 2 is going to have the new effects, I'm not interested. I like the Renegade version just fine.

It'll probably be the last DVD cut of the movie but with new-er effects. I think the effects for the last DVD version were done in standard def. But that's just a guess on my part.

Does anyone know if the Blu is the same for the US and the UK? There is quite a difference in the reviews on Bluray.com about the transfers... The UK one gets a better rating.

The US and UK discs have different extras. Looks like I have to import after all.

The 2004 "Special Edition" dvd states on the back case that the dvd was made from a "State-of-the-art 24P HD Master made from the original film neg. So at the very least this Blu came from a 1080 scan. I seem to remember the documentary on the new special effects being done in HD as well. The original Renegade Version from 1994 probably had special effects limited to SD resolution though, and those 94 effects have a cheap "video" look to them anyways.

Even if all the effects from 2004 where done in 480 that wouldn't stop the Highlander people, they have been releasing crappy unscaled versions of Highlander:The Series for a few years now. Claiming the original negative was "lost in a fire". When the truth is they edited the series on video (like many others of the time) and effects were rendered in SD. They don't want to spend the money to re-transfer the neg, re-edit the footage and re-do the special effects. Which it's hard to blame them with a limited market. But releasing them on Blu is nothing more than a money grab.

I think the "Special Edition" is the best version of the film, although it omitted one brief scene from the Renagade Version for unknown reasons.

They could at the very least have the other 2 versions (3 if you count the international version) of the film as an SD bonus as that wouldn't require any more money to include because they own the rights and have decent masters of those they could use.

EDIT: I hate that Highlander 2 artwork, hated it in 2004 and hate it still. The movie is already bad enough, they should at least try to do something decent with it.

I got my UK import the other day and got to say that the pic quality is really spotty during a brief review... but probably the best it will ever be. Looking forward to watching the whole thing and the new doc.

Picked up Highlander today. Refuse to buy Highlander 2 because, well, it's Highlander 2.

I will pick it up when the price hits about $10.00 or so. I still have a weird soft spot for the reworked versions of this film.

Went to BB to get Highlander, but couldn't find it. When I asked, the clerk brought it up on the screen and it showed November 12 as release date. I could have sworn it was slated for today.

Target had both of these for 14.99 each. I'm sticking with my UK steelbook for H1.

Great cover. If it has all the UK special features that were omitted on the US release, I might bite.

I guess I'm glad I didn't pick up Highlander 2 yet.

Then it's worthless and I may as well pick up the single release of Highlander 2 (as well as track down a good deal on the UK release of Highlander).

The only good part about HL2 is when he walks into the bar and you can hear the jukebox in the background faintly play Queen.

I'm probably in no rush to pick HL up anyway. I'd have to check, but I have 2 versions on DVD and they're good enough. As somebody else said it doesn't seem like they can do much th improve on the picture quality.

I picked up the US BD release a while back (it was just $15) and it's a vast improvement in picture over the DVD. Just remember that the movie can be extremely grainy at times (not a problem for me) and then suddenly look like a brand new film at times (mainly everything taking place in Scotland, excluding the big battle between the MacLeods and the Frasiers). This is due to how the movie was shot. They simply used whatever film stock they could afford and/or was available on a given day.

The audio will vary depending on your tastes. The DVD is more bombastic since it was a brand new sound mix. The BD features the original theatrical sound elements so (except for faint surround use) the 5.1 mix is essentially a stereo mix.

I was very satisfied with the upgrade since they eliminated the silly wooshing sounds that were added to the DVD release (to make it match with the series) and I thought the PQ was the best the movie has ever looked on home video.

I was just disappointed with the scant few extras on the US BD.
