That is an AMAZING price on the Naruse set. I think I paid twice that.

Re: July Eureka Newsletter - many great deals

I think I may regret asking this, but can someone school me on Eureka and this whole MOC thing?

I see some overlap with Criterion titles, and have seen some references to the companies being related, but am pretty ignorant on the whole matter.

If I wait long enough will many of these titles come out on Criterion? All the DVDs are region 2 PAL? The BDs? Generally solid reviews and a reputation like the Criterion line? Full of extras? Unique extras is the title is in both lines?

Simple answer: They are not related, they release some of the same titles, but usually with different extras and sometimes with slightly different transfers. Not all are Region 2 PAL, a couple are All Region PAL, and a couple are Region 2 NTSC. BDs are a mix of Region B and All Region. I have several MoC discs that overlap with my Criterion discs for one reason or another. A very worthwhile line.

This CriterionForum.org sub-forum has a trove of info on Eureka MoC series.

Yes, but it's difficult to predict which titles Criterion will release (hence I ended with quite a few duplicated titles between the two series -- e.g., the early Kurosawa's, the two Teshigahara's). And to further complicate the matter is the question of if/when MoC might re-issue some of their DVD titles in BD format.

Thanks zom and cine. Now that my Criterion collection is nearing completion, I can see another addiction forming. You and the OP are big jerks.

That's a really great price on the Naruse set -- I paid nearly twice as much for it.
