Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" 20th Anniversary Edition 9/14/10

from blabbermouth
The 20th-anniversary edition of PANTERA's "Cowboys From Hell" album will be in released on September 14.

Three different versions will be available:

* Two-CD expanded edition,
* Three-CD deluxe edition (includes one unreleased demo track, "The Will To Survive")
* Three-CD deluxe box set (includes one unreleased demo track, "The Will To Survive")

Originally released on July 24, 1990 via Atco Records, "Cowboys From Hell" was produced, engineered and mixed by Terry Date. Just shy of a year after its release on July 16, 1991, the album was certified platinum in the U.S. for sales in excess of a million copies.

PANTERA manager Kimberly Zide Davis, who joined Concrete Management in 1994, and served as vice president of artist management until the organization ceased operations in 2003, was interviewed for Guitar World's January 2010 issue, which paid tribute to late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. During the chat she stated, "[In 2010], we're going to do a 20th-anniversary re-release of 'Cowboys From Hell'. There will be some extra stuff people haven't heard before, deluxe packaging, digital remastering... I wish there was more [previously unreleased material], but that's one thing about PANTERA; they didn't do extra material. What they did is what everybody got. They didn't do throwaway songs. . . We're [also] going to re-release the entire catalog on vinyl. And then in 2012 we'll do the 20th-anniversary deluxe reissue of 'Vulgar Display Of Power', and then the same for 'Far Beyond Driven' in 2014. There are also a few other things we're working on, like trying to come up with a good way to get live shows out to fans, whether through downloads or a web site or some other avenue. And hopefully we'll release a fourth home video. The footage is definitely there. It's just a matter of getting it all together."

2 CD and 3 CD with no details yet other than the demo track? I'm guessing live stuff.

Personally, I'd like to see more video.

There are demos of every song on that album out there I think. I'm pretty sure they're posted on youtube if you want a sample of them.

I wish they included a dvd with a live concert.

Pantera has not released a good live concert dvd since the songs are cut short on the dvds for practical jokes and interviews.

I'm surprised they never re-released their earlier stuff from the 80s. I'm sure they're embarrassed of it and want to hide it but "power metal" is pretty close to cowboys from hell. Release that with a decent cover and I think it would sell.

Re: Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" 20th Anniversary Edition 9/14/10

I really wish Vinnie would give those first 4 albums a proper master and put them out. There's some great music in there, and some KILLER solos from Dime. I don't think fans give a shit that it's all glam and KISS-inspired metal. Hell, I actually LOVE the fact that it's so radically different.

One of my favs. Cheesy, rockin' and features one of my favorite Dime solos ever:

I'm pretty sure its all Vinny who hates the pre Cowboys stuff. I read somewhere that someone at a Hellyeah show brought up one of the old albums for him to sign, and he refused to do it

Wow if I had access to that record before Cowboys came out I would have ate it up with a spoon. Definitely better than a lot of stuff I heard in that vein. Clearly they didn't make in that style because of their looks. I gotta go find that stuff.

Well here's the "new" song "the will to survive" that they posted on FB

They were right to cut that off the album, but it's still awesome to hear something "new" from that era.

its weird hearing Anselmo hit high notes like that- he could never sing like that anymore after all the drug abuse. I actually prefer that a lot to their exhorder like groove metal sound that they started to really put together on vulgar display of power.

Re: Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" 20th Anniversary Edition 9/14/10

Well I can def confirm that this indeed is a full remater and not just a simple "lets boost the volume and call it a remaster" The guitars def sound cleaner as does the bass (you can actually hear the notes played instead of just the muddiness of the original cd version. Also the drums def sound much better too, as the symbols are now easier to hear and the snare is as well. If you play the original cd on a decent system, its hard to tell the dif between the snare and double bass drums, as they kind of sound the same.

i thought this cd sounded dated when vulgar display was popular. still sounds just as dated. decent cd but didnt stand the test of time like vulgar did. you could release that cd today and it would kick ass.

I think this remaster sounds hideous. The high frequencies are terribly tinny and harsh. The hi-hat is brutal. I can't remember the last time I turned the treble down.

I'll take the original volume matched to today's levels.

that's what every "remaster" is like these days. The only worthwhile thing on them seems to be the bonus tracks and they amp those up as well. It's like no one understands that just making the waveforms clip or practically clip with zero dynamic range DOES NOT sound good.

I wish more artists who actually give a shit and stand up against this. Thomas Dolby is the only one I can think of that had control of his remasters.
