Sequels with different MPAA ratings from the original?

A co-worker asked me if there was ever a film series in which a sequel had a different rating from the original, esp. if a sequel to a PG or PG-13 film had ever been rated R. I couldn't think of any, but I could think of a PG-13 sequel to an R-rated film: TERMINATOR SALVATION.

How often has this happened, i.e. a ratings change in either direction?

Thanks.

It's very frequent that sequels to R-rated movies are rated PG-13 or even PG to increase mass appeal. Beverly Hills Cop, Robocop, Police Academy, etc etc etc.

The other way around is much more rare. I can't think of any examples.

The original Poltergeist was rated PG, while the sequels were PG-13.

Ditto on the last two Indiana Jones movies, but to be fair the PG-13 rating didn't exist when Poltergeist, Raiders, or Temple of Doom came out. If it had, they almost certainly would have would have been PG-13. In fact, these are the very movies that inspired the PG-13 rating. Also the Gremlins movies.

I just looked up the original Planet of the Apes movies. All of them were rated G (!) except Conquest which was PG for some reason.

The Bond films went from PG to PG-13.

Alien vs Predator is rated PG-13 while Aliens vs Predator: Requiem is rated R.

Wow, I completely forgot that the first movie was rated G. That seems surprising to me, but Maltin backs you up, pointing out that the Director's cut is rated PG (which is how IMDB rates it). I've yet to see the director's cut.

For all the info Wikipedia provides, I'm really surprised they don't list a film's MPAA rating.

They used to, but then people from other countries started complaining because it showed a "bias" towards the United States. Rather than try to add ratings from all countries to each article, the consensus was to remove it entirely.

Try and add a rating to almost any movie article, and you'll get reverted within minutes. Within seconds if it's a high-profile flick.

Not a sequel, but the Toxic Avenger remake is supposed to be PG-13.

AVP was PG-13 whereas AVP:R was, well, R.

The Guyver was PG (PG-13 for the director's cut) whereas The Guyver 2 was R.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is rated PG-13, all other entries so far have been rated PG.

Scary Movie 1 and 2 are rated R (hard Rs at that), 3 and 4 are PG-13.

The Sometimes They Come Back series. Original was a (Harmless) made-for-tv film. Sequels were R.

Not exactly. Harry Potter went PG-13 for Goblet of Fire. I figured Harry Potter 6 would keep the PG-13, but it ended up receiving a PG. I wouldn't be surprised if the last two movies are PG-13 though...

This is a common misconception. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe because part 3 has a more family friendly setting in a theme park. But BHC III is indeed Rated R.

I think because it was a tame R rating; there wasn't much cussing, naked chicks, or gun-violence. Plus it sucked

Re: Sequels with different MPAA ratings from the original?

BeastMaster I think went from R to PG-13 to PG
Conan went from R to PG
Behind Enemy Lines was PG-13 where both sequels are R
Walking Tall (remake) was PG-13 both sequels are R
The Marine was PG-13 sequel is R I believe
RoboCop 1+2 were R and 3 is PG-13
Romero's Dead saga has been R for Night then UR/NC-17 for Dawn & Day then R for Land R for Diary and R for Survival
