"Deep Blue Sea" with

Spoiler:
Samuel L Jackson

"Executive Decision" with

Spoiler:
Steven Seagal

15 Minutes

Spoiler:
Robert DeNiro. I kept waiting for him to come back for the rest of the movie since they had him die off screen.

Re: Most unexpected movie death? (duh, spoilers)

Since there is no way in hell that anyone is going to know what movies are being spoiled in this thread from the title alone, can I strongly suggest that you all list the movie title but put the actual person/people who die within spoiler tags?

Please?

For example:

L.A. Confidential

Spoiler:
Kevin Spacey. Definitely did not see that one coming. I remember actually saying "Holy Shit!" out loud in the theater.

Although some fans ratted that out to me, it still took me by surprise. The way it happens is so abrupt.

"Deep Blue Sea" with

Spoiler:
Samuel L Jackson
This was no surprise. In fact, the trailer made it obvious and it was the reason I went to see the movie. It seemed like such a hilarious death for a "heroic" character.

"Executive Decision" with

Spoiler:
Steven Seagal
This surprised me when I saw it but it made perfect drammatic sense.

Most recently it was in 'Cell 211'.

Spoiler:
The death of Elena Vazquez Guardiola

Followed by the death of Juan Oliver, which was less of a surprise.

Fantastic film btw.

First time I ever saw that happen. Blew my mind. It's been done a few times now. Not many movies take so much time building a character and then BAM.

But it really did make it real. His character wasn't exempt from death under the guise of a mainstream Hollywood movie character. Police Officers die every day. Usually it's linked to some relatively unimportant crime.

Another one for To Live and Die in LA.

Shocked the hell out of me the first time I saw it, and still somehow surprises me each time I rewatch it.

I really love that movie.

Re: Most unexpected movie death? (duh, spoilers)

There's a nice commentary track for To Live and Die in LA where Friedkin talks about the struggle he went through with the studio to get the ending he wanted.

Also he offers the insight that
Spoiler:
it makes perfect sense for Chance to die. The whole movie is built around the idea that Chance is a guy who has been red-lining and risking himself and others for a long time. Even in his down time he is pushing the edge, as shown in the base-jumping scene. It was only a matter of time before something happened to him.

Re: Most unexpected movie death? (duh, spoilers)

Some more contributions:

Hard Core Logo
Spoiler:
when Joe Dick shoots himself in the head at the very end. Seems to come out of nowhere. But then when you think about it, you realize it's consistent with his character

Inglourious Basterds
Spoiler:
when Landa strangles the German double agent with his bare hands. It seems like there should be some witty repartee. Nope

Pulp Fiction
Spoiler:
when Vincent Vega gets blown away in Butch's apartment. The pregnant pause when Butch sees Vega makes you think like they're going to exchange some words. Instead Butch just squeezes the trigger

Munich
Spoiler:
the female Dutch assassin. First there's the surprise when you see the body of the Mossad agent she seduced and killed. Then there's the further shock when the Mossad find her houseboat and kill her in revenge. I guess it's to be expected since they actually talk about going to kill her. But you don't think it's going to be so brutal

Really? I thought they telegraphed his demise. What with
Spoiler:
George Clooney's comments about muscle memory earlier in the film, I knew Brad Pitt was toast the moment he entered the closet - hell, I expected his demise when he got in the house.
