Don't Tell Mom We're Remaking Her Mediocre '90s Film
From DHD:
As I predicted earlier today based on the success of Karate Kid, 80s remakes of family films are likely to be a big upcoming trend. Adults aren’t overall that inclined to see a remake of one of their favorite adult movies, while the brand identity associated with most 80’s movies doesn’t extend heavily to the younger generation. However, the line where demographics meets massive profitability seems to be where adults can introduce that younger generation to new iteration of their favorite films growing up. It’s called the family outing, folks. And Hollywood studios love family outings — that’s four prices of admission instead of two for couples and one for the lonely geeks (see: Kick Ass).
Add Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead to the pile of 80s remakes now in development. It’s kind of the perfect movie to remake, too. It was fun movie for my generation, one that I have fond memories of, but I don’t feel violated by a remake and understand that the original wasn’t very good in the first place, so it’s difficult to mess it up too terribly. The best part of Don’t Tell Mom these days, in fact, is watching it again to see the very early (and cheesy) work of David Duchovny and Josh Charles.
Mark Gordon, via his The Mark Gordon Company, is producing the remake. Development just began on the film, and it’s now out to writers.
For the unfamiliar, Don’t Tell Mom was kind of a rip-off of Home Alone, only instead of leaving one child behind for a weekend, the parents here left their three children behind for the summer. With an elderly babysitter. Who died. The oldest teenage daughter (Christina Applegate) — in order to maintain her summer of freedom — thus decided to lie her way into an executive position with a fashion designer. Awesomeness ensues.
************************************************************
Aside from a few barely memorable scenes, and the immortal "Dishes are done, man!" line, does anyone even give a rat's ass about the original, let alone seeing a new version? Does this name really inspire confidence that a hit film will ensue? Hasn't a film like this been made a jillion times already? Talk about scraping the barrel...

1. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead is not an 80's movie.
2. I had and still have a gigantic crush on Jayne Brook.
3. I'm guessing this will be cheap ripoff of The Devil Wears Prada. I actually enjoyed Don't Tell Mom... until the second half when it turned into a fashion show movie.

I still enjoy the original. Not interested in a remake. It's too 90's to be updated. It'd be like trying to remake Clueless.

I'm expecting Three O'clock High remake to be announced at any moment now as well as a new Mighty Ducks film and a reboot of The Land Before Time, in 3D.

a Mighty Ducks reboot should be soon too.
anything that sounds like it will make money, will get made, somewhere down the line.
This particular title is still confusing though.

I see the correction, but those two movies were still nothing alike, except for the alone part (which I wouldn't go so far as to say that because the oldest child was 17 and there were 5 kids altogether). Their mother only hired a babysitter because of how long she was planning to be gone, and she certainly didn't leave them at home by mistake.
The movie aired about a month ago and I enjoyed watching it again after all these years. I've started watching "The Good Wife" during re-runs this summer, and when I first saw Josh Charles I thought "It's Brian!" He still has a wholesome and kind vibe after all these years.

They could easily top this movie. It's decent, but nothing huge. I remember when it came out, I was expecting a crazy farce type movie, but it was much more mellow. It has some 80ish stuff in it, but not really the 80's. I guess that's how a lot of early decade movies are.

I have always enjoyed the movie, but they will probably remake it as a PG kids film.

It's nostalgic but it wasn't a classic film. The only thing I remember from the movie it all is a scene where the camera is panning across the one kid's bedroom and a poster of a naked chick with some things covering her nipples is up on the wall.
I'd welcome a remake. Hell they're remaking everything nowadays.
