I'm hopeful about this as I'm a sucker for well-done period battle epics. I like Brian Cox in just about anything, same with Giamatti, two of the best in the business IMO.
It's got a "2010" release date, but nothing more specific than that that I'm aware of.

In 13th century England a determined group of Knights Templar defends Rochester Castle against the tyrannical King John.
It is the year 1215 and the rebel barons of England have forced their despised King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta, a noble, seminal document that upheld the rights of free-men. Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule. Barring his way stood the mighty Rochester castle, a place that would become the symbol of the rebel's momentous struggle for justice and freedom.

First, the title made me think this was to be about a Civil War ship. Second, given Purefoy is the lead, do you suppose this will help Solomon Kane finally get a US release?

I missed the bump with the redband trailer.
This is now scheduled for July 26, 2011 release. I'm looking forward to it, good cast.

Well I had noticed the bad reviews(43% on RT) and was worried, but I caught an early screening of this and it was better than I hoped for back when I started this thread. I really enjoyed it.
Straightforward storytelling, too rare these days. Excellent cast even in smaller supporting roles. Excellent period feel, very realistic battle scenes, and no silly 'movie' melodrama which I really appreciated. Not a single person, believe or not, falls to their knees in a receding crane shot and yells "NOOOOO!!!". One would think that impossible these days in a film with action scenes.
I can understand how this film would get bad reviews in the 'modern' film climate. The violence in and out of battle is handled realistically and matter-of-factly, there is no silly melodrama, the tone is dark and dour and is not artificially lightened 'for the audience' The critics are pussies, and wrong. It's not the greatest film ever made or anything, but it's a terrific film.

Holy crap. I totally forgot this was coming. Looking forward to seeing it.
Now if only Lionsgate would get off their ass and finally release Solomone Kane on BD so I can buy it already.

Cool movie, I enjoyed it for what it's worth, a blood and guts fest. The producer mentioned in an interview that they wanted to give the audience a feel what it would have been like to witness this type of fighting, and it shows. They made realistic wounds and used practical blood rather than CGI (for the most part). I remember one scene in particular where a soldier was getting his arm hacked off and it showed the bone, tissue getting torn up rather than just a bloody stump.
James Purefoy carries the film well, he's a great actor. I thought the little love interest side plot was unnecessary though.
Anyway the film is worth seeing for the action alone, so I'll recommend it.

I did too. Not that it was poorly acted or anything, just that it felt like 'let's stick this in for the chicks' or something. Definitely felt forced, the film didn't need it. Luckily it's a small aspect of the overall film.

Watched this today. Solid. Cox, Giamatti, Jacobi, and Purefoy were all memorable. Good period action flick that doesn't skimp on the gory details, and would indeed make a nice double-bill with Solomon Kane. Purefoy is like all dreamy and shit.

Just saw this on netflx. I loved this movie. The whole thing just rang true. I thought they captured that place in time very well.

This was a cool movie. Loved the cast and performances.
Side note: I just found out yesterday Kate Mara is Rooney Mara's (The girl with the Dragon tattoo) sister.

Got this for BF. Never seen it before. Pretty cool B flick type of thing. Kind of has like a Ridley Scott-lite when it comes to some of the battle sequences. Always cool to see Brain Cox in something. That guy is always cool, except for his Planet of the Apes flick. Was pretty badass seeing him kick ass and get fucked up in there.

Yeah, this was cool. The sequel sucked and it was also directed by the same guy. I guess that's what happens when they slash your budget.

For some close association w/ the material. I need to see that Arn: The Knight Templar, the complete series BD. Dunno if it's worth $15. Was $10.99 last year. Of course.... I didn't know that thing existed either.

The version on Netflix is the inferior, truncated version.
