By "of the past 20 years" I'm assuming they don't mean "created in the last 20 years"? Otherwise some of their choices should be eliminated. Including #1.

I find Robert Langdon more compelling than most of those one-hit wonders. I'm looking at you Hancock.

If they wanted to go for all of pop culture (which is what this list looks like), omitting Wolverine, is epic fail at the least.

Re: the Top 100 characters of the past 20 yrs according to EW (movies, tv, books)

It's a bogus list. No Ash Ketchum from Pokemon, no Pikachu, no Naruto, no Jason Statham characters (Frank Martin/Chev Chelios), no one from PRINCESS MONONOKE (I'd put Lady Eboshi in there), no John Woo characters (Tequila from HARD-BOILED or the villainous one in FACE/OFF), no Wong Fei-Hung (Jet Li in the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA films), no Asia the Invincible (Brigitte Lin in SWORDSMAN III: THE EAST IS RED), no Spike Spiegel from "Cowboy Bebop" (who just got referenced on "The Young and the Restless"), and worst of all, no Saki Asamiya from YO YO GIRL COP.

(Oh, all right, I'll admit my choices would be just a tad too...eclectic?... for EW.)

The only ones they had on their list that I would agree with are the Tarantino ones--Vinnie and Jules from PULP FICTION (listed as one character) and the Bride from KILL BILL.

Re: the Top 100 characters of the past 20 yrs according to EW (movies, tv, books)

I assume EW means characters who, in the past 20 years, took on another life in the pop cultural zeitgeist outside of the movie(s), tv show(s) or book(s) they appeared in.

Some of these are good picks for that, but others are really head-scratchers (Hancock? Really?!??), and there are far too many omissions (for example, the other main characters from Seinfeld).

not sure how Tony Stark gets in there, but not Batman or Spider-Man (2002). and as mentioned Wolverine. SM and Wolverine (X-Men) broke the comic book movie genre wide open and have significantly changed the landscape of these genre movies forever.

This was already mentioned in the 24 tv thread, but Jack Bauer at only #44?

You're telling me Harold/Kumar, Ron Burgendy, Cher from Clueless, Roseanne, Ally McBeal, Bridget Jones, Carrie from Sex and the City are all better characters than Jack Bauer? And I didn't even mention like 10 characters that I'd never even heard of.

Re: the Top 100 characters of the past 20 yrs according to EW (movies, tv, books)

Like with any "best of" list there are some definite head scratchers. Agree that to not have Batman on there is ridiculous..

a character from Glee Apparently is better most of the characters created in the last 20 years. laughable.

It almost seems that whomever came up with this list was just flipping through the channels to see what was on and wrote them down.

Re: the Top 100 characters of the past 20 yrs according to EW (movies, tv, books)

At first I thought it was mostly about cultural significance, but there are many characters on there that I have never heard of before. If it's not about cultural significance, then I wouldn't exactly call the upper part of the list accurate. It's kind of ridiculous that it looks like it's limited to only one character per book/show/movie.

Re: the Top 100 characters of the past 20 yrs according to EW (movies, tv, books)

I can't stand EW. It was never a great magaizine, but every once in a while they would have a pretty cool article. Now all they do is cater to pop-culture loving tweens. I've been getting that magaizine for free for the past year because of some promotion and it goes right in the trash. It's a half step away from being OK! or People.

Given these few multiple character listings (12. Fox Mulder & Dana Scully - The X-Files, 29. Vincent Vega & Jules Winnfield - Pulp Fiction, 65. Lorelai & Rory Gilmore - Gilmore Girls, 86. Karen Walker & Jack McFarland - Will & Grace), it's clear they allow multiple characters for each position on the list, but are rather arbitrary about actually doing that (even when it's clearly called for).

You're right. She should be #2. Can't really argue with Homer.

I didn't even watch 24 often and I think Bauer is too low.

I take these kinds of lists for what they are, just silly fun. Hancock, though? I expected Ally, Fox and Dana, but it was nice to see Lorelai and Rory and, especially, Felicity!

Re: the Top 100 characters of the past 20 yrs according to EW (movies, tv, books)

I'd drop:
Frasier, Sarah Conners & Elmo since they have all been around longer than 20 years. I wouldn't call, slight character tweaks worthy of inclusion. It's not like Elmo was a lime green T-rex before 1990.
Stephen Colbert is a person not a character
Harold & Kumar
Tim Riggins (FNL)
Edward Cullen - who composed this list?
Gorillaz - a band?

I'd add*:
Andy Sipowicz - NYPD Blue
Mark Greene - ER
Gil Grissom - CSI
Coach Taylor - FNL
William Wallace - Braveheart
Leonard - Memento
Léon - Léon
Kronk - Emperor's New Groove

*just quick, off the top of my head notable omissions

Unless I missed them....

Al Swearengen - Deadwood
Josh Lyman - The West Wing

Those are pretty big misses IMO.

Dale Cooper (TWIN PEAKS)
Jean-Luc Picard and/or Data (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Gil Grissom (CSI)
