A remake/reboot of Alias in very early development at ABC
After the early demise of ABC’s sci-fi series FlashForward, speculation is rising that the network may try to retain its crestfallen Lost fanbase with a remake of Alias. Discussions about rebooting J.J. Abrams’ fantastic Jennifer Garner series are reportedly in very initial stages, which is sort of exciting if you’re a starved fanatic of the original. Still, I hope these early talks never move beyond ABC producers’ nostalgic roundhouse kicks in the mirror, because a certain rumor about this potential remake reminds us of the CW’s upcoming Nikita, and in the worst way possible.
Forget the obvious point that female-starring action series haven’t fared well in recent years (as the unemployed Jamie Sommers and Sarah Connor can attest), because that’s only a fraction of the real reason to discourage this Alias revival. According to E!, the new version would eschew the original’s mythological underpinnings, which makes this idea sound just like Nikita, which is already a franchise reboot itself. Don’t we have watered-down remakes covered with V alone? Adding a flat Sydney Bristow reiteration to the mix sounds like a recipe for clinical depression in the messageboarding underworld.
Besides, is the original series’ somewhat dense Rambaldi storyline reason enough to ditch mythology altogether? I can’t commit to any production that hinges on the idea that a cult sci-fi hit would be better loved if it removed the cult and sci-fi. I suppose Sydney’s iconic red wig would be re-rendered in a drawing room-friendly aubergine, too?

okay...reboot it with Jennifer Garner, but have it take place after the 2nd season....that way we can all pretend that the horrid seasons 3-5 never happened.

I loved ALIAS even though it basically went down the tubes after the second season (one could even say the big Super Bowl episode is when it started going down hill).
It would be amazing if they could get the original cast back, reboot it, rein in the mythology aspect (but not get rid of it) so it becomes manageable, and map out the story in advance.
It will never happen in a million years, but one can dream.

I doubt they could get Jennifer Garner or Michael Vartan back but without J.J. Abrams involved then it might be a bad idea I wouldn't outright oppose it though. I'd give it a shot.

Funny. Was just thinking about this, should've made it to blu-ray by now.
I agree this would be like Nikita but I don't think that'd be a bad thing. Rambaldi stuff was interesting early on, but I enjoyed the standalone missions more. It was fun watching Garner dress up in these silly outfits and steal something and listen to techno.
Edit: and maybe they can come up with a new Rambaldi device storyline but handle it better.

Isn't it too soon for this?
I wouldn't mind a remake of seasons 3-5. Though I didn't hate them, I found them deeply flawed. I wouldn't mind tighter plotting regarding the mythology (they went off the rails more than once) but it'd be stupid to remove it altogether.

No it didn't. The writers not knowing what to do when Lena Olin decided to play hardball and then paint themselves into a corner is what ruined the show. The Rambaldi storyline is what separated this show from any other spy show.

Odd. I thought it was the outrageous costumes, smart writing, and Jennifer Garner. Rambaldi was ok in tiny doses. All Rambaldi all the time, which is what Alias became, was stupid and insufferably boring.

This is a terrible idea. Instead, bring back the original cast and make a movie that ties up some loose ends and works as a better sendoff than what we got a few years ago. I loved almost all of Alias, including Seasons 3 and 4, but Season 5 went off the rails and it was only a shadow of it's former self to me. It was still better than most television but certainly disappointing as a conclusion.

I'm looking forward to Nikita and Undercovers in the Fall along with Chuck's 4th season to satisfy my Spy/Action Needs. I have no interest in an Alias reboot/remake or whatever the hell you want to call this. I doubt a Good TV Producer in his right mind would want to touch this. Plus, JJ Abrams has moved on to Undercovers, Fringe and the movies. Count me as one of those who didn't like the Rambaldi crap on Alias. I much preferred seeing Sydney travel to Paris, London or Frankfurt hanging out at Euro Trash clubs and beating the shit out of guys twice her size. That was what made the show fun.

What's with all the naysayers? Sure, Alias got bad toward the end, but if they're trying to bring back the good version with the benefit of hindsight, I say bring it on.

This is fucking obnoxious. The fact that the show in question is Alias isn't that big of a deal to me, it's the fact that it's so damn recent. Instead of putting money towards a new idea they decide to rehash something so recent? Just when I thought the industry couldn't get an worse, they do this.
And I've go to say that I'm shocked at all the people who are happy for this. You'll just eat anything put in front of you with a smile, huh?
