I asked in one of the Criterion threads about new releases coming out with lower numbers and was confused. I was set straight when I was told that they were just re-released editions as the movie will keep the same spine number.

Here are some of the comments regarding such:

All of this makes sense, but when I looked at Criterions website I noticed many numbers missing. I clicked on the Criterion Collection tab, not just DVD or Blu. These are the numbers I found missing.....quite a few. So are these all retired or getting a re-release? Or is the movie being negotiated for a release?

If you look at the numbers on the Wikipedia list you will notice the bulk of the numbers you mentioned are part of sets: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...n_DVD_releases

Examples:

67, 68 and 69 belong to the OOP The Orphic Trilogy (#66)

125-128 belong to Carl Theodor Dreyer Box Set (#124) which is still in print

370-373 are all a part of Paul Robeson: Portraits of an Artist (#369)

These are just a few of the examples, most of the ones you mentioned belong to either a set still in print or one that is out of print. I'm sure someone who knows more about Criterion releases can come in and give more info.

When Criterion releases a boxset of films, the boxset itself gets a spine number AND every film in the boxset gets it's own spine number following the boxset number.

The individual titles in boxsets are not listed on the "List View" option on the Criterion website. You have to click on the boxset and then the individual films are listed on that page with links to their own pages.

Also if a film is re-released inside of a box-set, it retains the original number, for example The 400 Blows retains #5, box set is #185, and the 2nd movie in the box set is #186.
