$3.98 MGM DVDs @ Amazon

There appears to be a growing selection of MGM titles on Amazon that have had their MSRP lowered to $3.98. The most noteworthy title I've found thus far is Gates of Heaven, but here's what I've found thus far, though I'm sure there's more:

A Dog's Breakfast
Assassination
A Tale of Springtime
Alice
Alphabet City
Ambush Bay
Bad Influence
Bagdad Cafe
Best Men
Bigger Than the Sky
Blue Steel
Carbon Copy
Confessions of an American Girl
CQ
The Day After
Dead of Winter
Echo Park
Eureka
Fires Within
Fool for Love
For Queen and Country
Gates of Heaven
Go
The Grissom Gang
Happy Accidents
The Holcroft Covenant
I, Madman
I Love You Don't Touch Me
Impulse
Intermission
Jeremy
Killer's Kiss
Killing Me Softly
The Locusts
Love and Other Strangers
Love is All There Is
No Such Thing
Perfect Strangers
The Quiet American
Rancho Deluxe
Roadie
Sex is Comedy
Slam Dance
The Smokers
Staying Together
Taffin
Vernon, Florida
The Wild Child
Women vs. Men

I'm largely unfamiliar with this lot, other than Vernon,Florida and No Such Thing, which I intend on ordering shortly. Are there any other gems hidden here?

Captain John Smith and Pocahontas
The Learning Curve
The Chateau
The Yes Men
Angel of Death

Christina's House

...got tired of digging after those.

Gotta say, most of these look like B-grade releases, if not outright stinkers. Intermission wasn't bad. Nearly all the rest I've never heard of.

A lot of them sound like the ones that Dollar Tree was blowing out last year.

I do recommend The Grissom Gang. I got that on clearance last year and it is very good.

Glancing at a few of the descriptions at Amazon, the film CQ looks to be well-reviewed.

CQ has excellent production values and is very stylish. Killer's Kiss is also early Kubrck. I got both on the cheap last year too.

Gates of Heaven is a highly regarded Errol Morris documentary (I always confuse it with Heaven's Gate).

Alice is a charming Woody Allen-Mia Farrow thing. I remember liking it in theaters.

Bagdad Cafe is supposed to be good.

Day After is supposed to be good; not sure how well it has held up.

Killing Me Softly has Heather Graham and Fires Within has Greta Scacchi.

Wow. I would say over 1/2 of these have turned up at Big Lots, but if this is a permanent price reduction, that's huge.

MGM probably desperately needs some free cash flow at this point. These low selling items could give them a boost even at this price.

John Frankenheimer: The Holcroft Covenant
Hal Hartley: No Such Thing
Catherine Breillat: Sex is Comedy
Nicholas Roeg: Eureka
Joseph Mankiewicz: The Quiet American
Robert Aldrich: The Grissom Gang
Robert Altman: Fool for Love
Chen Kaige: Killing Me Softly

So yes, lower-to-lowest rated films by first and second tier film directors.

I loved A Dog's Breakfast, but I'm a bit of a stargate geek.

Happy Accidents is worth a watch and the Day After is interesting.

Re: $3.98 MGM DVDs @ Amazon

Here are a few of these that I like a lot:

CQ - excellently made picture, the story of making a movie with a lot of similarities to Danger: Diabolik, Barbarella, and Modesty Blaise, so fans of those films will be pleased. For others, the narrative and leading character are a bit cold, so I don't know how engaging it would be. A fun cameo from Jason Schwartzman (director Roman Coppola's first cousin) as a Roman Polanski-like director working on a Dance of the Vampires-like movie. Also, excellent bonus features, including a very informative commentary by Coppola.

Rancho Deluxe - This is a great buddy movie with an appealingly shaggy, post-hippie vibe. Fine performances from Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston as modern-day rustlers, picking off the occasional cattle for pocket money and rent. A young Joe Spinell in (bad) old-age makeup plays Waterston's father, for some reason, even though he was only four years older than Sam at the time. Very grainy transfer; I don't know if it accurately represents the way the movie is supposed to look, but for a low price I would recommend it. No extras besides a trailer.

Roadie - I love Alan Rudolph's quirky comedies, but not everyone else does. This one stars Meat Loaf as the world's greatest roadie, able to improvise solutions to any problem with amps, lights, etc. Lots of fun cameos including Don Cornelius as a promoter who's not quite able to get ML's character's name right.

Actually, a lot of this films have gone out of print, so I don't doubt this sales are just for liquidating overstock.

considering buying Grissom Gang, No Such Thing, and The Wild Child

aside from Grissom Gang, anyone see Hal Hartley's 'No Such Thing' or Truffaut's 'The Wild Child'? does the latter hold up to Truffaut's better works?

Eureka is basically Nicholas Roeg's last "big" film a la Man Who Fell To Earth. I just ordered that to get my over $25 on the Walkabout BD pre-order - figured that was a nice enough double bill. It is def worth $4.

No, I don't think you are exaggerating. Any fan of Truffaut should order it.

Re: $3.98 MGM DVDs @ Amazon

I like Catherine Breillat's films and have (or had) some in my collection. My favorites have been Romance, A Real Young Girl, 36 Fillette, and Criterion's Fat Girl. Sex Is Comedy isn't her best but for a look-see it certainly is worth the price. Most of her films have their moments of explicitness so be forewarned.
"Breillat's experience shooting the film [Fat Girl] inspired her 2002 film Sex Is Comedy, which revolves around shooting a sex scene from the film".

OP---you list the movie "Go". The only so-titled film I can find at Amazon is a Sony release. Don't find "Go" in the search listing a few posts up either. Can you link to the MGM film, if there is one? Not finding it at Amazon.

If anyone is on the fence about getting this one, read David Hewlett's interview on the Amazon page. It's enough to convince me to get it:
