Let the disappointment, bitching, and/or moaning roll in...

For those who remember...
Dark Knight grossed $18 million in it's midnight screenings.
Transformers 2 grossed $16 million it its midnight screenings.
Browsing Fandango right now in Vegas. All IMAX showings still have tickets available for this afternoon and tonight's times, which was not the case with those two films. Even screenings of Watchmen in IMAX were sold out here in Vegas for the weekend prior to opening.

The company notes that plenty of tickets are still available for purchase.

Seriously. Iron Man 2 had no chance in hell of doing TDK's numbers, much as I hate saying that.
1. He has no huge villain that's popularly known to the public.
2. No popular actor was found dead.

It appears the sequel will destroy the original's foreign total of $266 million. I still think this can open to at least $140 million, which is nothing to sneeze at. It'll get to be #1 for a couple of weeks until Shrek 4 opens. I don't see Robin Hood knocking it off next weekend.

Box Office Mojo says Spider-man 3's midnight opening was $10 million. That still went on to earn $151 million over the weekend. And that also opened on the first Friday in May, same as IM2.
The original Iron Man's midnight number was $3.5 million.

I still can't believe Twilight: NM did $26m+ @ midnight.
I'm betting this'll do around $132m OW, but don't forget that a lot of shows might not be selling out becuase this is in A LOT of theaters and playing around the clock much more than TDK could.

Multiple theaters here are starting shows at 10:00 am and playing every hour. I'm sure that's the case in other cities. Plenty of options.

Transformers 2 started in mid-June and The Dark Knight started in mid-July, what do those have in common? School was out. Iron Man 2 had no such luck.

And I think Twilight opened on a schoolnight, but that midnight audience was primarily lonely middle aged women.

Dark Knight also had the benefit of multiple midnight screenings at the same theater. All the theaters around me were doing one (a few did two) midnight show and that was it.
Dark Knight was on at least four or five screens at midnight when I saw it.

Also, IM2 is opening in early May as opposed to at the beginning or middle of summer, something which is likely to affect Thursday night and Friday daytime attendance.

Dark Knight comparisons are ridiculous. Is every superhero movie going to be held to the standard of TDK from now on? TDK was a phenomenon. IM2 while a lot of fun I thought, is just a summer movie.

School-age children, especially during the summer, make up a huge portion of the midnight crowd. They all want to be first to see it and are very good at manipulating parents.

Well, being that TDK is the new standard, and that Iron Man (now that Spidey is out for a few yrs) is 2nd in popularity... yeah, it's a fair comparison. (in terms of box office)

Looks like it'll have the 5th best opening weekend, just behind Dead Man's Chest at $135 mil. Not too shabby. DMC went on to $423 mil. I can see IM2 following a similar path.
It's now earned $190 million in foreign gross. Only $76 mil more and it passes the original. Could very likely end up with $800+ million overall.

I love living in an era where IM2 opening to $130m is considered somewhat disappointing.
Glad to see Freddy sink like a stone. But, hey, PD made their budget back, so they prob couldn't give a shit less. Fuckers. I hope they can the announced sequel.
