The Simpsons Season 13 - Aug 24, 2010
According to TVShowsOnDVD the 13th season of the show will be released on 4-disc DVD (MSRP $49.99) and 3-disc Blu (MSRP $59.99) in August. The only bonus feature will be audio commentaries on all episodes.
I like that FOX is continuing the show and that now they will be offering it on blu-ray, but it seems like season 13 might be the last extra-packed season we get since the commentaries were recorded over a year ago...

Re: The Simpsons Season 13 - Aug 24, 2010
My only question is concerning the dual format release. Season 20 was the first time they started producing and airing the show in HD (and that was for half the season, as the first half was apparently upconverted, and looked it). Does that mean Fox will just do the same thing here? If so, I'll just go with the standard DVD...

I never really paid much attention to the special features on the other sets, aside from listening to a few of the commentaries and the different commercials they had, so I don't really care. However the price should go down if the features are missing.

Glad they are continuing the releases. Even if this isn't Simpsons at its best, there's still some great episodes.
I'm going to be VERY disappointed if they don't release another "Head" Package to go along with Krusty The Clown and Comic Book Guy. I've always picked up the "Head" Packages (since they started with the dual packaging) on release day and then picked up the standard box later on when it was on sale and would like to continue that trend, so hopefully they are planning on a "Head" Package and just haven't released the image yet.
I really don't see why anyone would get this on Blu-ray though, especially when it is most likely just going to be upconverted. And why they chose Season 13 to kick off the non-HD broadcast Simpsons on Blu is beyond me; if anything, they should have gone back, done work on the "classic" seasons and released them on the format.

The problem with these weak seasons is they really need as many bonus features as they can.. what is with the skimping? They've done such stellar work on all of the previous seasons, why stop now? This is a bit ridiculous.

I hope they release a head packaging for this and the remainder of the seasons, if nothing else, at least as an Amazon exclusive or something.
If no head packaging, I might go for the blu.

I didn't see this on any major DVD news sites but officially the set will be jam-packed as usual. Phew. What a relief.. I'm a Simpsons completist but I was going to hold off since honestly Season 13 is just one of, if not the weakest season of the show (IMHO). Looks like it will be available a month early as well at Comic-Con.

Hardcore fans will have the opportunity to score the set a full month earlier at San Diego Comic-Con July 22-25. Fans who purchase these early copies of the season set will also receive a collectible limited edition lithograph as a free gift.
The set will feature all 22 episodes from the thirteenth season, including audio commentary on each of them from executive producers, directors, cast and even special guest stars like Stan Lee, Joe Mantegna, Delroy Lindo and others.
Also included are deleted scenes, featurettes, animation showcases for two episodes, sketch galleries and various Easter eggs. Other than a few menu animations, the Blu-Ray set offers no additional content.

Seeing the SD episodes on the season 20 blu-ray makes me not care about Simpsons on blu-ray until season 21, when the show was actually made in HD. I think I'll get the regular DVDs until then (and I like the fold-out packaging they've been using for the last few seasons - they look great with some fun new art, don't take up much space, the discs are easily accessible and the booklets are fantastic).

I may buy the bluray because I hate the way my dvds have gotten scratched in the fold out packaging they have used the last two seasons.

I was under the impression this would be available for purchase at Comic Con and not just pre-order. Anybody happen to pick this up at Comic Con and want to comment on the packaging? Is it more or less the same as Season 12?

True, but the upconverted episodes were quite noticeable in comparison to the HD ones. Considering that basically, Season 13 of the show would basically be completely upconverted, I wouldn't expect the Blu-Ray release to be worth the extra money.

The first half of the season was natively in standard def and upscaled to HD on the first disc of the blu-ray - which weren't a huge difference from the show on regular dvd.
While the final 11 episodes were in HD and presented as such on the blu-ray and looked fantastic.

I didn't pick it up. They were charging $40 for it and the bonus "lithograph" was a cheap poster. I'll wait for African-American Friday and pick it up for $20.

Okay, thanks for the info. That's what I had presumed. I figure the next significant packaging change probably wouldn't come until S16.

Yeah, they've been consistently changing it every five seasons, so while it looks like crap on my shelf that it changes like that, at least it's in intervals.
