4/24 Box Office -- Kick-Ass plummets, Losers and JLo weak
Courtesy of Deadline Hollywood:
FRIDAY PM UPDATED: Sources are telling me it's shaping up already as a very lackluster weekend for North American grosses before the summer movies really get going. The Back-Up Plan with its horrible high concept debuted No. 1 but will fall to No. 2 by Sunday. (When it gets beaten by charming How To Train Your Dragon 3D from DreamWorks Animation distributed by Paramount for its 5th weekend.) J-Lo's pic is the 2nd straight loser from newcomer CBS Films which kept delaying the release for obvious reasons: because everyone knew Jennifer Lopez can't open a movie anymore, except Les Moonves. (Sheesh, J-Lo can't even keep a record label...) And the Warner Bros-distributed The Losers, from Joel Silver's unsavory Dark Castle, was marketed like a low-rent A-Team -- and still it disappointed like most of his pics from that brand. (Please, Joel, put it out of its misery already.) The actioner was #3 Friday but should drop to #4 by end of Sunday. And Hollywood expected a steep drop for Kick-Ass after Lionsgate unethically inflated its opening numbers by including Thursday's take in order to grab the No. 1 title last weekend. No self-respecting studio does that anymore. But Lionsgate is feeling the heat from Carl Icahn and needed the PR boost. I'll have more analysis in the morning when I'll also refine the Top 10 numbers:
1. The Back-Up Plan (CBS Films/Sony) NEW [3,280 Theaters]
Friday $4M, Estimated Weekend $12M
2. How To Train Your Dragon (DWA/Par) Week 5 [3,665 Theaters]
Friday $3.6M, Estimated Weekend $15.5M, Estimated Cume $178.4M
3. The Losers (Warner Bros) NEW [2,936 Theaters]
Friday $3.3M, Estimated Weekend $9M
4. Date Night (Fox) Week 3 [3,294 Theaters]
Friday $3.2M, Estimated Weekend $10M, Estimated Cume $63M
5. Kick-Ass (Lionsgate) Week 2 [3,065 Theaters]
Friday $2.8M (-63%), Estimated Weekend $8.3M, Estimated Cume $33.5M
6. Death At A Funeral (Screen Gems/Sony) Week 2 [2,459 Theaters]
Friday $2.2M (-58%), Estimated Weekend $7.3M, Estimated Cume $27.8M
7. Oceans (Disney) NEW [1,206 Theaters]
Friday $2M, Estimated Weekend $6.3M, Estimated Cume $8.7M
8. Clash Of The Titans (Warner Bros) Week 4 [3,271 Theaters]
Friday $1.9M, Estimated Weekend $6.8M, Estimated Cume $143.4M
9. The Last Song (Disney) Week 4 [2,794 Theaters]
Friday $1.1M, Estimated Weekend $3.5M, Estimated Cume $55.2M

Hard to believe Dragon will claim #1 in its 5th week. That's either very impressive, or a sad commentary on how weak films have been in the past month. Regardless, people are hungry for something universally awesome, and I have a feeling Iron Man 2 is going to do HUGE numbers because of that.

I was referring to Dragon, but the forum is loading slow for me and your post popped up in between Groucho's and mine. Iron Man will easily kill Nightmare.

I can't believe "Out of Sight" is now 12 years old. I liked that Jennifer Lopez. Her movie career has tumbled quite a bit since then.

Did it open for a full Thursday or is it one of those Thursday midnight deals where it technically is a Friday showing starting at 12:01am? I see no problem counting those for the weekend count.

Doesn't really matter as it did them no favours anyhow - all the early articles that most people saw were claiming Dragon as #1 last weekend and by the time the 'actuals' came out declaring Kick-Ass the winner, no one really cared. The casual person who likes to read what movie is #1 probably thinks Dragon beat Kick-Ass last weekend too.

Nightmare on Elm Street will be huge next weekend then sink like a stone when Iron Man 2 comes out.

Tyler Perry was the #1 movie during that weekend. Something tells me Iron Man 2 will be just a tad more popular.

I was hoping Kick-Ass would hold better since the word of mouth and reviews are generally good. Maybe people are more interested in seeing larger then life heroes and were swayed by the Hit Girl "controversy"

I doubt Nightmare will hold on any better. The Friday remake was actually pretty decent for a Friday The 13th movie, and I doubt Nightmare will be as good. On top of that, Friday didn't have a major summer blockbuster following it up the week after, which Nightmare obviously does.

Back-up Plan isn't really that bad, per se, it's just a one-dimensional rom-com. J-Lo isn't the driving force in the film, Alex O'Loughlin gave a far more impressive and authentic performance. Really it's just a mediocre film that will be completely forgotten once it leaves theaters.

Re: 4/24 Box Office -- Kick-Ass plummets, Losers and JLo weak
I think Dragon's longevity is that it's a good movie and the movies that came after are good, but don't have staying power.
Clash of the Titans (I'll be happy if it goes over Fast and Furious)
Date Night would have done better if opened in June (Get Smart type-run)
As far as May goes, something's gotta give. May is always jammed packed and there's always one supposed hit that falters because of an overcrowded market.
2009: Angels and Demons, Terminator Salvation
2008: Speed Racer, Prince Caspian
And I'm feeling it to unfortunately be Robin Hood. I wish it would be Shrek 4.
