3D Dot Game Heroes - PS3 05-11-10

Silicon Studio set out to make a game primarily as a means of showing off its graphical effect middleware -- and then chose a retro-style action RPG as that showcase. That shouldn't work at all. But somehow, the developer managed to pull it off; 3D Dot Game Heroes is a faithful, expertly crafted reproduction of NES-era gameplay that happens to highlight spectacular visual effects in a logical way.

The studio pulled this impressive feat off by designing a world composed of giant cubes, essentially 3D versions of 8-bit sprites. This style is overlaid with insane visual effects, like an exaggerated depth of field that makes everything look miniature, and surreal, sparkling water. Even the spells are winkingly based on graphical effects like shaders and parallax maps. It's essentially the lost NES Zelda game. Or, rather, it's a parody of the Zelda series executed so perfectly that it is itself an excellent Zelda game.

3D Dot Game Heroes puts you in the role of a hero saving the kingdom of Dotnia from some threat by gathering some orbs from dungeons or something. Honestly, it isn't important why you're walking from dungeon to dungeon. The game does away with any pretense that the story matters right away. For one thing, you can select your character from a group including a little tank, a dog, Santa Claus, and the President from an obscure Xbox game -- or you can make your own in the character editor. The fact that the game expects you to look ridiculous immediately obviates any drama you could reasonably expect.

Second, the writing, both in terms of original scenarios and Atlus's localization, is rife with humor at the genre's expense, as well as references to, among others, Demon's Souls, Ys, and even The Goonies. Not only did this mean that I never forgot I was in a game, but it also meant that I actually wanted to speak to the people in towns -- which, to be perfectly honest, is pretty far from my experience with most "real" Zelda games. The light-hearted tone really makes this pseudo-8-bit world an inviting place in which to have an adventure.

The hero's time is divided between walking an overworld straight out of A Link to the Past, full of people, monsters, and abundant sidequests, and navigating a series of dungeons extremely reminiscent of the original Legend of Zelda. These collections of tile-based, rectangular rooms hit every note you'd expect from a real Zelda dungeon, including basic concepts like keys in treasure chests, life upgrades from bosses, and an emphasis on problem-solving using the tool that you just happened to pick up (like the boomerang, the bow, or the Hookshot, or "Wire Rod.") Even the enemies will be familiar to you -- like the knight you can't attack head-on, or the wizard who teleports directly in front of you to fire a beam.

Unfortunately, the experience is marred by constant backtracking. 3D Dot Game Heroes ameliorates a lot of the tediousness of traveling back and forth with an easily purchased warp item, but there's just enough backtracking throughout to be frustrating. Sidequests usually involve warping from town to town to town, picking up one thing and delivering it to someone else in exchange for another thing. These are usually rewarded by both items and hilarious dialogue, but there are only so many that I could do in a given session before getting tired of traveling the world. Even worse, there is a dungeon with a switch mechanism that requires switches to be hit in a specific order throughout. This resets when you die. And even if you don't die, and decide to warp back to the nearest town to get some items, you have to climb a mountain to get back to the dungeon, which you then have to retrace exactly. That's not fun.

Thanks largely to those sidequests, 3D Dot Game Heroes actually contains a lot more depth than its forebears, in ways that don't disrupt the retro purity of the dungeons. By undertaking these tasks, you can find a bunch of different swords (all of which are enormous when you're at full health), upgrade the swords you have, find extra health and armor items, and even play in-engine tower defense, Breakout, and racing minigames.

None of this is going to matter if you don't appreciate classic games. If you think the original Zelda is antiquated and no longer worth playing, you're not going to be thrilled with 3D Dot Game Heroes. Also, you're wrong. But if you do long for a day spent searching for bombable walls and fighting fire-breathing dragons with segmented necks, you'll be right at home in Dotnia.

It's $36.99 on Amazon (why so cheap?)

I pre-ordered this with the current gamestop deal of 25% off orders of $100 or more. It looks sweet and I probably would've gotten it at full price, so paying $27.50 is a steal. Just from the videos I've watched and previews I've read, I'm guessing this will end up being my favorite PS3 exclusive to date.

I'm very jealous of this title. Do Atlus exclusives tend to remain exclusive?

This looks pretty neat, but this strikes me as something that should be a downloadable than a disc game. At least it isn't full priced.

Because it looks cheap?

From the previews, I actually thought it was gonna be an even cheaper downloadable game. It looks fun, but there's no way it had even a tenth of the budget of the average PS3 disc-based game.

I have it pre-ordered from when it was in my gold box,but I'm not sure I really want it. It looks pretty good, but not really my type of game.

The Game Informer review said non-completists would still take 20 hours or so to get through. Everything I've seen and heard about this game I'd go full price without question. I'm super excited for the game, but I think it's biggest target audience is obviously those that are susceptible to nostalgia.

This game looks amazing. I definitely want it. Supposedly it starts out cute and cuddly, but From Software pumps up the difficulty towards the end and its standard super hard From Soft by the end of the game.

Is that good for them or bad?

I have this pre-ordered, but with so much other stuff coming out, I wonder if I should just wait for the pricedrop.

I understand how ratings work, but some sites give traditionally lower ratings and some give higher. Some sites save their 5s for blockbuster games and some sites save their 5s for different unique games. And since I don't know much about xplay's reviews, that's what I was curious about - what does average for them mean?

Re: 3D Dot Game Heroes - PS3 05-11-10

They definitely save their 5s for the huge unique games that actually expand whatever genre they're a part of. 4s are for games that do everything right, or even exceptionally, but don't add much new to what's come before. 3s are you standard work-horse games that will be enjoyed by fans of whatever genre that game happens to be. 2s are for bad games that miss the mark, and they save 1s for games that are essentially broken and unplayable.

I like their review system.

Although, reading or hearing the review for 3D Dot Game Heores, it sounded like they were about to go with a 4, so a 3's kinda surprising.

Re: 3D Dot Game Heroes - PS3 05-11-10

Nothing to do with that review, but I'm leaning towards canceling this preorder. I have so many unplayed games, and without the Zelda/NES background, I don't think I'd really appreciate it enough to make it worth my while. I'll decide this weekend, but as of now, I'd rather put that money towards Modracers or Alan Wake.

Typically, it isn't too tough to figure out the final grade based on the way the review is going. I agree, the review sounding like it was heading for a 4.

Not a very popular title, but I'll bump to say the game comes out tomorrow.

Amazon shipped my copy.

Re: 3D Dot Game Heroes - PS3 05-11-10

I pre-ordered this when it was in my gold box, and promptly forgot about it. I am looking forward to playing it, but I probably would've canceled the pre-order if I had remembered in time. Too late now. I mean, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but my backlog is too big to justify spending $35 on this right now.
