Saturday Night Live in the 2000's Time & Again special

Nobody posted anything but this was a great show.

Interesting segment about the difficult time during 2001 where they had to be careful and sensitive when it came to writing sketches and how it took awhile before they could get comfortable again doing comedy.

I Miss Will Ferrell, Poehler, Fey, Maya Rudolph, Sanz, and even Fallon. Fallon and Mick Jagger lol. Just shows how much time flies.

Wish they would have showed the year or date when they would show the sketches on the show.

I totally forgot about it; hopefully I can catch a replay.

As far as the sketches, you can find transcripts of particular sketches at http://snltranscripts.jt.org/ which should help you determine when it aired.

This was a very entertaining show... I miss those cast members too. What's funny is most would bash the SHIT out of them when they were on the show.

Sanz looks good -- he lost a ton of weight.

It's always the same. People ALWAYS bag on SNL. Yet you watch stuff from even a few years ago and there's definitely a bunch of funny to be found. And a lot of the folks that look back at that stuff and say they miss those days were the ones giving it shit then. It's a never ending cycle.

I thought the special was great. Mid 90's to early 2000's I was keeping a lot of stuff on video, but gave up on it from about 2003 on. Nice to see some of that stuff again. Great to see that Fallon/Fey Grease skit again. I had just recently dug into my stuff and found it to watch it again. Could've saved myself a bunch of time by just waiting.

What's noticeable is that Amy Poehler is twice the weight she used to be (pregnant or not).

When there's 20 funny skits in 15 years ... that's a pretty awful batting average. Yet Lorne Michaels' rep remains unscathed.

Boy, some of the skits they showed made me feel old. I still remember the Debbie Downer skit where everyone started cracking up on-stage, but didn't realize it was nearly 10 years ago.

EDIT: Looked it up on the SNL Transcripts site, it was only 6 years ago. Bah, still feel old.

So you continued to watch a show for 15 years after identifying about 1.5 funny items per season?

I liked the show. Thought it was interesting to have the interviews and see some of the behind the scenes production rather than just your standard SNL compilation show.

I didn't care for how more than half the show was them praising Tina Fey. Maybe they have selective memory, but she wasn't that funny back then.

Exactly. The "Dick in a Box" comments were worthwhile.

I liked the comments and the behind the scenes stuff as well, like Beyonce not wanting to do the dance skit and Drew Barrymore being terrified because of the anthrax. I didn't notice during the live show, but she was shaking and her voice was trembling during the opening.

Re: Saturday Night Live in the 2000's Time & Again special

I found it to be hilarious that they came out and said that the writers "shined" after Farrell and Fallon left.

If you watch carefully, you'll notice the only sketches they show after Fallon left are from the '08 campaign buildup, or involve Justin Timberlake. Everything else from the post Fallon era were the Digital Shorts.

People rag on SNL, and have since the beginning of the show. The problem is that in the last 6 years even SNL themselves are having trouble pointing out their funny moments. The digital shorts are obviously good and the '08 campaign was a meatball. Not to knock Fey, but the Palin sketches wrote themselves.

This documentary basically showed the problem with the show at this point: the best part of it isn't live and is done by a closed off group within the show. And the rest of the show has had one strong creative streak in the last 6 years.

Re: Saturday Night Live in the 2000's Time & Again special

SNL hasn't been remotely funny since the Will Ferrell group left in the early 2000's, although Darrell Hammond is still funny these days. They rely TOO much on political humor, and it is stale these days, as alot of debates in '08 would be taken word for word, how unoriginal! What made the debates in '88 and '92 is that they would parody the characters so much from what they really say you would believe that is the way they talked! For example, Carvey doing Bush 41 saying, "Wouldn't be prudent or Not gonna do it!" He never said that, but people thought the President really did!

I think some of the reason is that Lorne Michaels is past is prime and doesn't know what is funny anymore, another reason is the talent they have on SNL in the past 10 years is pretty weak. Has there been one breakout star??? And another is SNL fatigue, 30+ is enough.

Re: Saturday Night Live in the 2000's Time & Again special

What made the '08 debates funny is that they were using what the candidates where saying and just using different emphasis and reflection.

Personally I think the show is still funny. It doesn't hit every week but I still laugh out loud at some of the sketches and they aren't just the digital shorts. My main problem with the show now is that they never replaced Poehler and Fey and the female cast is severely lacking. Also I think Meyers is a hack and not funny in the least so I can't watch WU at all so that's a portion of the show that I'm missing out on.

The female cast is sorely lacking in part because they fired the only woman post-Wiig who had any talent. Still mad.

Andy Samberg's Digital Shorts just about single handedly carry the funny on that show.

They just got her last season. I guess I didn't notice she was gone but I thought she was funny on New Adventures of Christine.

Gotcha. I just remember reading about Watkins getting fired, didn't realize there were 2 fired. I don't watch regularly any more, so I don't really know these cast members.

I had actually forgotten about Watkins. She was actually pretty good as well. The two of them were certainly better than their replacements.
