She was recently on Desperate Housewives as Orson's Mother. That's sad for Hal Holbrook and their entire family. RIP Ms. Carter.

That really is sad. She was a class act.

He married late in the show. It gave the show the opportunity to add a younger kid (as Gary Coleman was getting older) in the unfortunate form of Danny Cooksey's Sam ("Mama, I'm gonna sing me a song").
Later, Sam moved to LA and covered for John Connor when the T-1000 was looking for him in the arcade.

Very sad. RIP Dixie.
I worked as a Studio Page on Designing Women in 1986-88. One of my unofficial duties was to walk Ms. Carter to her car after the show taping. She was a very sweet and interesting person.

I remember seeing her and her husband Hal Holbrook a couple years ago when he was nominated for an Oscar - and I thought to myself that she'll be a widow soon since he's about 15 years older. You just can't predict life.

I liked her on DW but Family Law was my favorite show of her's (which no one else probably remembers).

RIP Dixie. I met you once, sat right next to you at a taping of Designing Women. Talked to you about your upcoming cabaret performances. Classy all the way through. You will be missed.

So sad about this news. Even though she was 70, she still seemed to young to die. May she provide laughter to the angels as she did to all of us on earth!
