Looking forward to my "alternative way" is up shortly after airing. After last week's episode I can't wait for the coming eps. May end up subscribing next week since a month will take me to the series' conclusion.

I thought this episode was going to be like "Bastogne" with the opening narration by Hanks and the vets talking about how bad it was on Cape Gloucester. It was still pretty good.

Liked the scene with Nate Corddry's character reading them the comic that portrayed Basilone as the hero of Guadalcanal.

Actually kind of dozed off a bit during this episode.

Just real slow.

Next week looks awesome though.

A slight departure this week, but still a good episode. I like Nate Corddry's "Loudmouth" character.

Keep in mind that in addition to the narrative that they also conveying various aspects of the war in this series. We saw this in BoB with the Holocaust, the medic's perspective, obtaining points to go home, etc.

This episode demonstrated the psychological toll of jungle warfare. I imagine most of the men that survived carried these scars with them for the rest of their lives. And yes the preview next week promises some intense action.

Re: the Pacific "Part 4" 4/4/10

I never knew too much about Cape Gloucester so I enjoyed learning about it. Reading about it, the casualties were very low compared to Guadalcanal (7,100 Allies killed at Guadalcanal compared to 310 at Gloucester), but this episode showed that they came away fatigued anyway.

Next week is the Battle of
Spoiler:
Peleliu. This is where Sledge's memoirs start
Should be awesome.

Yeah, I wish we saw more of the fight at Cape Gloucester -- the historical footage they showed at the beginning of the episode looked like it was a nightmare.

Not to be an ass, but was any of that fighting done during daylight hours?

Honestly, I found myself asking that same question last night, just as general question about these island battles.

Re: the Pacific "Part 4" 4/4/10

Wasn't last night episode where somebody (maybe Leckie) said that the Japs would bomb them at night if for no other reason than just to keep them awake?

I mean that's a pretty good strategy. Sleep deprivation. Other than completely changing your entire routine and working at night and sleeping during the day, by continually fighting at night, the Japs would be able to keep the Allies completely out of sorts and sleep deprived.

Not sure why, but this series just isn't pulling me in the way the BoB did. Maybe it's the lack of a cohesive company/cast of characters, not really sure. Well made and well acted and all that, but something just seems a little off.

That does sound like a great strategy. However, with WWII technology, I'm not sure that night-fighting was a great idea, so I would have expected the large-scale fighting to still happen when the sun was up.

Take Episode 2, which depicted the actual event of 16 marines killing 3000 Japanese soldiers. One would hope that a commander who knew what was going on would have changed tactics after the first few attempts failed.

From here on, I think I'll just follow the series via these forums, and read a book to learn what actually happened. So far, all I've got from the series is low-grade horror, night fights I could not follow, and unneeded T&A scenes based on events that never actually happened.

If you want porn, it is freely available elsewhere. If you don't, say if you are trying to convince your wife that a show is worth watching, then T&A is less than helpful.

Re: the Pacific "Part 4" 4/4/10

Most Japanese counterattacks on these islands took place under cover of night so they could get as close as possible before unleashing a banzai charge. Of course it worked both ways as they never quite knew what they were heading into and the inflexibility of their command structure made it impossible to adjust on the fly. Just think what they could have accomplished at places like Guadalcanal if they hadn't thrown away thousands of soldiers each night.

And this series is much more of a gut punch than BoB was which is to be expected given the horrific nature of the war in the Pacific.

If you want to watch a WWII documentary there are plenty of those airing all the time on the history channel

Re: the Pacific "Part 4" 4/4/10

This was easily my least favorite episode so far.

Part of it is a lack of action, but part of it also is poor filmmaking. If it weren't for the opening interviews that talked about the relentless rain, mud and horrible conditions for months on end I would have though maybe they had a rainy weekend on the island. Just like I would have guess based on the last episode that they spent a week or two in Australia.

Four eps in and Lecke is the only character I can recognize, and I don't even like him. I don't know who the guy was who shot himself in this ep. I don't know who the guy was who was in the cell. ( I couldn't even understand that guys line at the end of his trench story, "Jesus..." something, it seemed to be significant based on Lecke's reaction, but I got nothing after rewinding it 4 times over.) I'm not bonding with these characters. I'm not empathizing with their situation, not on a personal level.

He was the guy who strangled the Japanese soldier with his bare hands. He told lucky that he hoped Lucky dies quickly so he didnt end up like him.

But then he uttered something that apparently I wasn't the only person who didn't understand it. It was something about the guy who was next to him in the bunker I think.

I think what happened is the guy who was praying next to him was killed. He told Leckie "Jesus I envied him" is what I could make out.

You don't recognize John Basilone or Eugene Sledge, the other two main characters besides Leckie?

I don't know who the guy was who shot himself in this ep.
They hadn't shown him before as far as I can tell. It was just a random Marine that Leckie saw shoot himself.
