Weekend Box Office Thread - Easter Weekend '10 - Clash #1: Tyler vs Miley

Actually, Tyler Perry won that battle with no problem what so ever. Another "WTF?" from me.

Easly Estimates from Deadline Hollywood:

1. Clash Of The Titans from Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures debuted close to $30M from 3,777 theaters, including the $4.2M from Thursday night, so that's an estimated $65M for the weekend.

2. Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too for Lionsgate opened to $13M Friday from 2,155 runs and may reach $30M this weekend.

3. DreamWorks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon distributed by Paramount made $11.2M Friday from 4,060 locations -- down just -36% from a week ago -- and could reach $28M this weekend.

4. The Miley Cyrus starrer The Last Song from the Nicholas Sparks novel opened to $7M Friday from 2,673 plays and may reach $16M this weekend with a $25M five-day cume after Sunday.

5. Disney's 3D Alice In Wonderland from Tim Burton starts its 5th weekend with $3M from 2,980 venues and probably an $8M weekend.

I have a gut feeling Dragon will actually be in second this weekend.

Look for Clash to drop over 60% next weekend. Word of mouth will murder it.

Yup, more so if you saw it in 3D.

If this follows fairly closely to 300's pattern, it'll still have a great shot at $200 million. 300 dropped about 54% in its 2nd weekend and then held steady until it crossed $200 million. But depending on how big weekend 2's drop is, probably more like $175 million. But I think WB would still be happy with that. There's still no mention of the budget though. The effects in the movie look like they cost $10, but I'm sure this one was probably $100 million.

Why are people still amazed that Tyler Perry's films do well?

Nice numbers for Clash, even though it apparently sucks. I'm still going to see it for myself tomorrow.

I have a feeling that this movie will play out like Watchmen did. That movie had a descent opening and then tanked. Hopefully this will be true with Clash as well. A terrible movie that people will hopefully see as such and tell their friends not to see it.

^ But don't forget, the better Clash does (and subsequent Legendary Pictures films), the more money they'll be able to pump into their Godzilla '12.

Titans is going to appeal to a lot more people, so I expect it to reach at least $150 million, if not more. If it holds under 60% next weekend, then I'd say $200 million is very likely. It helps that it's rated PG-13. That should help sell a few more tickets. It also helps that there's not much competition in terms of genres in the next few weeks until the Elm Street remake shows up.

I think Date Night will do well next weekend, but I don't think it'll steal too much from Titans.

Shutter Island looks like it'll be #10 this weekend and have a gross very near $124 million. This will be week #7 that it's in the top 10. Paramount no doubt is thrilled by the legs of this film and its success ($225 mil worldwide).

Box Office Mojo says the production budget for Titans is $125 million.

What might be another big help for Titans is that a lot of public schools are on Spring Break both this week and next. While I didn't like it overall, I will admit that it would have been my quest to see it over Spring Break were I anywhere from 8-14 years old.

Yeah but I think 300's WOM was a lot better than this probably will be. I hope it does well enough to give us a sequel at least.

That's a good thing? Don't you remember the last time Godzilla was botched by, essentially, and American film studio?

I thought the 3D was weak but people leaving the theatre when I saw it were raving about how awesome the 3D and movie were - like LOTS of people... so I'm not sure this is going to sink as much as you think.

Far too well. I'm just trying to be as optimistic as possible about his return, but I have serious reservations that it'll be done right.

I will also say that while I didn't think much of it, my audience applauded. The majority of the audience were kids aged 10-16, which would be music to WB's ears.

Cloverfield = $26 million budget.
The Host = $11 million budget.
The Mist = $18 million budget.

Just saying, a good monster movie doesn't need that much of a large budget.

For shits and giggles: Godzilla 2000, a far superior film compared to the abortion that was the Americanized version, only cost Toho $9 million to make.

How could it tank after it already opened in descent?

The Bubo bit seemed to me like they were in essence giving a big middle finger to fans of the original.

Nice to see a guy who spends most of his movies delivering Jesus messages being beaten out by a far more interesting pantheon, even if Clash was not a good movie.
