Metro 2033

Metro 2033 is coming out on March 16th. That release date took me by surprise. Not much publicity so far. Hope that doesn't mean the game is gonna suck.

Amazon has it on sale for $49.99.

Here's the trailer:

Here's some gameplay footage:

And here's a preview:

Have it pre-ordered. May or may not cancel and wait for an inevitable price drop.

Re: Metro 2033

I have a $10 Amazon promo certificate for this from Darksiders, but it's tied to my account. If it were a code, I'd just give it away.

I could probably gift the game to somebody if they wanted to send me an Amazon gift card...maybe split the difference and send me $45. PM me if you want to give it a shot. I assume it's good for both 360 and PC, but I can't check the Amazon mail from work.

Anybody who ordered Darksiders from Amazon before this week should have the promo in their account BTW.

Re: Metro 2033

I'll check it out. Looks like they have built a pretty cool world around the game. The shooting parts seemed to be pretty basic and on rails from what I saw in the trailer, but nevertheless, I'm down for a good post-apocalyptic shooter any day.

Re: Metro 2033

Well, I'm not impressed. It feels like I'm playing a PC game from a few years ago, with an XBOX controller. The controls and icons highlighting what to do are so awkward and are clearly straight from a PC port. Also, the aiming is really bad, and it's just overall hard to tell what the hell is going on or what you're shooting at. The graphics/sound/mood are all pretty good, but this should be a 39.99 game and I'd feel a little better about it. Maybe I'm spoiled by properly running FPS games like Bad Company 2, but this just doesn't cut it for me. 6.5/10

Re: Metro 2033

Thanks for the review.

But yeah, I was looking at it as $30 or less game. Good to know about the graphics/sound/mood since that's what called my attention about this game first.

Re: Metro 2033

Did anyone else get this? Any thoughts? I bought a Steam activation code from someone on CAG for $20. I haven't tried it yet, but my computer is new and powerful enough to run it at least fairly well. I'm having my computer-whiz cousin come over and tweak it to run on my system optimally. It looks pretty interesting and while I wasn't at all interested at $60 or $50, I figure I can't really lose at $20, right?

Re: Metro 2033

This came out the same day as the Dragon Age expansion on Steam, so in a weak moment I added this to the cart when I bought the other.

First it looks awesome. The graphics are incredible. But so far the gameplay leaves much to be desired. Too much time forced to follow an AI character lead. Too many scripted events where all of a sudden you lose control of your character so the plot can happen. It's like the developers didn't trust us to play their game right, so they never give us control.

I was expecting to explore creepy subway tunnels on my own. Instead I get to follow friendly AI with such helpful advice as "Grab a gun, they're trying to get in this room. Shoot them as they come in." or "Get on the train car. Oh no I hear they're coming. Shoot them." In the first hour there were 3 scripted events where I was overwhelmed by the monsters and thought I was dead, only it find out it was just to advance the plot.

Others who have gotten further, say that some checkpoints are very poorly spaced (you can't save anywhere) causing you to repeat some parts over and over when you fail. Also that ammo is very scarce, but there's no melee weapons to fall back on- so if you run out of ammo you're screwed.

Also, while I've got my Nvidia drivers current, I still got a warning message that they were unstable and I shouldn't play the game whenever I started it (but I had no issues with crashes or graphic glitches when in the game).

So in short, I wish I had waited for a sale price (or skipped it altogether) because it's not the game I was hoping for. I may finish it someday, but for now I'm playing other stuff.

Re: Metro 2033

That's kind of a bummer. I guess it was cheap enough for me that even if I don't like it, it doesn't kill me with regret. Still, experiences like that remind me why I prefer to buy my games for the 360 or PS3 where I can sell or trade them if I'm unhappy with the results.

Re: Metro 2033

I read some interesting/good reviews but after reading Tscott's review I'm not longer interested in the game. Not even at $20.

Re: Metro 2033

It seems to be a bigger system hog than even Crysis. I have two brand-new computer games for my new gaming rig : Just Cause 2 and Metro 2033. I'm using FRAPS to maximize my frame rate. With highest details, Just Cause 2 looks amazing and is running over 100 FPS -- I'm adding 4X anti-aliasing and other stuff just to drop the frame rate to near 60. With Metro, at Normal settings it's chugging along at 20 FPS or so. I mean it looks good, but I can't understand why it's so taxing on a top-notch system. So far, it doesn't seem the sort of a game that inspires someone to go out and buy two $400 video cards just to run it above 30 FPS.

Re: Metro 2033

I could not get into Metro 2033 at all. One of my podcast partners loved it though and played through multiple times. Sounds like it was well done story wise, but I just couldn't get into the mindset.

Re: Metro 2033

I'm enjoying the 360 version, but I got sidetracked by Deadly Premonition and Just Cause 2. I'll play through it once and then trade it back in. I like it but I don't see it having much replay value.

Could not have said it better myself! i was so looking forward to this but it failed to keep my interest very early on. I stopped playing it weeks ago and am unsure as to when I'll pick it up again.

I just started last night and unless you lose it later in the game, you have a knife for melee attacks.

I'm only about an hour and a half in (almost done with Chapter 2) and I'm liking it so far. The feel of the controls reminds me somewhat of Half Life 2, which admittedly did seem a little dated when I played it on The Orange Box. In lots of the fights, it does seem pretty tough to tell what's going on, but that's due to the creature design. They're fast and low to the ground and can jump pretty far. When there's a bunch of them coming at you, it's a bit of a clusterfuck. I actually kind of enjoy that though. It's a change of pace from enemies who just grab positions and occasionally pop their heads up for you to shoot at them. The mutants swarm and you have to keep moving and take your time to make sure you're getting good shots and not wasting bullets.

Re: Metro 2033

Finished this up last night. I must not have done very well though, because I barely got any achievement points. And I understand there are multiple endings? I didn't see much of a chance for side missions or other moments that would influence the endings... anyone know how that happens?
