From Here To Eternity (Re: George Reeves)

I've always heard that actor George Reeves had a much larger part in "From Here To Eternity", but because test audiences were so distracted by his association with the "Superman" TV series, much of his work on FHTE was edited out of the final theatrical version.

Does anyone know if the original footage of Reeves' expanded work on the film has been preserved? If so, what are the chances we'll get to see a restored version of the film with all of Reeves' scenes put back in?

From IMDB:
A false rumor has been circulating for years that George Reeves, who played Sgt. Maylon Stark, had his role drastically edited after preview audiences recognized him as TV's "Superman". According to director Fred Zinnemann, screenwriter Daniel Taradash and assistant director Earl Bellamy, the rumor is false. Every scene written for Reeves' character was filmed, and each of those scenes is still present in its entirety in the film as released. This rumor is nonetheless repeated as truth in Hollywoodland (2006), a movie about the investigation into Reeves' death.

Thanks, FinkPish, for dispelling that rumor! I've never seen "Hollywoodland", but have long heard that Reeves' role had been edited. I understand that there are many differences in storyline between the book and screen versions of "FHTE", but I hated to think that any of the original scope or vision for the movie had been sacrificed to accomodate a fickle contemporary audience as well. Because of this, it's good to know that the final print of this classic film really is as the director intended! Thanks again!

And it's a safe bet that all of Frank Sinatra's scenes made it into the final print...or else!

(Trading off yet another false rumor about ETERNITY's production history.)
