Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

As someone requested in the PS3 thread, here's an informal poll to see what the failure rate of PS3s are. Since the magic console death window is usually two years, I figured that would be a good measuring stick. Thought about checking for PS3 Slim fail rates, but they're so new that I didn't think anything would be gained. If you had a PS3 Slim failure, include a comment below.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

80GB that's a little over a year old here. No overall problems thus far, but one day last summer I was playing for several hours on a hot day (pushing 100°F) and it locked up on me. The system felt really hot, so I gave it a few minutes and tried to boot it back up again and it wouldn't work. Let it cool off completely for several hours and it started up just fine. So lesson there is go outside on a hot day, but I'm really hoping that wasn't the start of serious problems for my system.

At just over 2 years, the Blu-ray drive on my light-use 40GB failed.

Heavily used 60GB that is over 3 years old and still had no issues. Keeping fingers crossed big time.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

My 40gig is just a month shy of 2 years old. No problems. But that's not really saying much as it only gets turned on a couple times a month. My 360 is my primary gaming machine and the PS3 is my secondary blu-ray player.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

My ps3 had stopped reading any disc. you could turn it on, access PSN, etc, but would not read Blurays, dvds or anything. It was out of warranty so it cost me 150bucks.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

40 gig, gave to my cousin, still works.

slim, currently use, still works.

360, 3 RRoDs, probably would've sold it by now if Alan Wake was coming to the PC.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

I have 3 PS3's. A launch 20 gig, a 60 gig with backward compat, and 2 others without backward compat. No failures yet, although 2 get very little use and the other 2 are primarily used for Blu ray and DVD.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

I forget when I bought mine, but it was well after the 360 and I've had that for a little over two years. No failures on either.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Central Park to knock on all the trees.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

40 GB (upgraded to 320 GB) bought in Dec 2007. Primary used as a blu-ray player and streaming kids movies from HTPC. I've played most of the big PS3 blockbusters though.

Zero issues.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

I guess I forgot to write about mine. 60 GB unit. Bought from Amazon for my Birthday in 9/07 (back when you got a 10% discount on all Blu Rays for a year with purchase. Miss that). Watch many Blu Rays. Play occasional games, more downloaded PSN games than disc based. Zero issues. Still near-silent. Accidentally gets turned on a lot (and left on for a long time) by my son, but still seems fine. (knocks wood)

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

Still rockin my launch 60GB unit. It's also really quiet when it's on. Mostly a blu ray player since the only games I get for it are the ones you can't play on the 360.

Re: Informal, Unscientific PS3 Failure Rate Poll

My 60GB is about 2.5 years old nothing wrong yet. It's used daily for DVDs and BDs, with light gaming mixed in.

A friend of mine has already had to have two repaired. I think one was the drive issue, and one was the YLOD issue.
