This re-releases have been known for a long time now. The only one of those films that went OOP was My Neighbor Totoro. A Disney insider mentioned in another forum that Blu-ray releases for these films will also be released either later this year or in 2011.

Maybe it's just me, but maybe Princess Mononoke might be TOO dark a Miyazaki film for Disney to distribute on DVD. This is, after all, the same company that keeps screwing over its Black Cauldron fans.

I don't think they would have a problem since they can brand it as part of the Ghibli line.

Princess Mononoke is a Miramax title. Disney is in the midst of selling off it's Miramax library....someone else will end up with the rights. I secretly hope somehow it winds up with Criterion.

The other two films can be considered as OOP though they can still can be had with most retailers.
I haven't hear of this one. Were you referring to the 3 re-releases or maybe Spirited Away?

Strange that the above boxset didn't have Porco Rosso included... wasnt that released at the same time as Nausicaa?

Of course, it's totally possible you've read something I haven't, but if you're just extrapolating from the news that Miramax is going under, I wouldn't jump to conclusions.I guess they figured Porco Rosso was a "lesser" title, like The Cat Returns, Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart and My Neighbors the Yamadas. The ones in the box set are essentially the well-known "classics".

I don't really even consider that Borders Exclusive a box set; it's just the individual releases housed in an oversized slipcover. I understand people's desires for complete box sets, but wouldn't it be best to wait until Miyazaki is done making movies before getting such an encompassing collection? If they released box set with everything through Ponyo it would be incomplete when his next movie came out.
I don't know why that "box set" wouldn't have Porco Rosso, but the reason it doesn't have The Cat Returns, Pom Poko, Whisper Of The Heart, or My Neighbors The Yamadas is quite simple - that is a Miyazaki box set and despite his involvement with some of those movies, none of those were actually directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
