Question about front projector LCDs and anamorph-ism

Anamorph-ism 
Anyhoo... My question is this. From what I understand, anamorphic signal is sent to a widescreen 16x9 TV by the DVD player. When a regular 4:3 is attached, it deletes some lines, adds the black bars and sends it to the TV.
Now, what about a 4:3 LCD projector with line doubler? My guess is the DVD will still downconvert the signal (creating artifacts, degrading the picture
etc.) and ... then what? Does the picture look good? Does the line doubler make a difference in this situation? How does it compare to a widescreen RPTV? 
The reason I'm asking is... I'm looking into playing my small, recently acquired DVD collection in something other than a computer monitor. Which works great for me, but I have a hard time convincing family members and friends to gather around a computer monitor to watch movies
While looking for other alternatives, I "remembered" that I had a 100" front projector LCD all set up in the basement
You see, this thing has been sitting there for almost three maybe four years now and we haven't used it for anything other than a few rented LD movies and karaoke stuff... we sorta lost interest in it after a while.
We probably need to upgrade the whole audio equipment (since it's just Dolby Pro-Logic) but right now I need to know how the LCD works with the dvd player and anamorphic movies.
The projector is a Sharp XV-H37U with S-video (no component inputs, although some newer models might have it... saw the specs on a webpage). The manual does document a "masking" feature but I think all it does is add some hardware black bars... I don't think it does any anamorphic squeezing
Can someone confirm/explain this? Any webpage where I could find more information? I tried search engines but all I could get was one-page spec sheets and dead links (mostly).

Does your LCD allow you to adjust the picture size vertically? If yes, you can set your dvd player to output the video in 16x9 mode (which doesn't delete any lines and will produce a stretched image on a 4:3 TV) and use your projector to "squish" the image down to the correct proportion.
