The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1305806/

Director - Juan Jose Campanella (Son of the Bride)

Out of all of the films I've watched the past year, I think this just may be my favorite of them all. Heck, maybe not even just of this past year. It's about as flawless a film that I have seen in a good while. I believe it made the short list of foreign films that have a chance to be nominated for best foreign film at the Academy Awards representing Argentina, but I may be wrong about that.

If you get a chance to watch this one in any way, do so. It is on a totally different level than everything else this past year as a whole in my opinion. I don't really want to go into the actual plot all that much so I can't really say much more. Just consider checking it out if you get the chance.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

Well, this just won the best foreign film Oscar. Have any of you guys been able to watch this one since I started this thread? Hopefully this means that we'll get a great release of it on BD here before long. It is without a doubt my favorite film of all of 2009.

The foreign films I never heard of win every year, so I picked this one in the Oscar pool. Yaay!

Sony Classics will be releasing this here in the States - don't know the actual opening date though.

The script was great, as were the actors, shame though the print I saw missed a 20 minute reel.

This had a limited opening today, although I'm not sure just how limited it is right now.

The New York Times listed New York City and Los Angeles as having opened yesterday, but it also opened in the DC area as well, at Landmark Bethesda.

I'm gonna try to catch it at Cinema Arts sometime this week. I've heard nothing but great about this movie.

I saw this awhile back and thought it was a very good film. It doesn't hurt that I'm a big fan of Ricardo Darin. I'll wait for a DVD or BD release to rewatch as it is unlikely that they'll show this in my area.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

made it to the theater yesterday to see this and really enjoyed it. I was a little concerned at the beginning because it felt like a Law and Order episode, especially when they did a walk and talk to the crime scene. After that, the movie settled down and started to pull me in. I don't think I would've chosen this as Best Foreign Pic, A Prophet still holds that title for me, but it was very good and deserved to be recognized.

Just saw this. Outstanding film. I'm torn, because I too felt "A Prophet" should have won. Until I saw this. Two different films, but both equally great. This one will stay with me for a while.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

For those of you who have watched this now, you can check out the Jeff Goldsmith Creative Screenwriting podcast Q&A that he did with writer/director/editor Juan Jose Campanella about the film. There is a lot of talk about the writing of course, but also lots of other great tidbits about the entire filmmaking process since he had his hand in pretty much everything:

Do not listen to this unless you have watched the film, as spoilers for everything are discussed.

Was really surprised by this. I mean, I think I saw this movie because of all the comments here, but didn't know too much about the movie, so I was surprised on how much I enjoyed it.

Really great story, excellent acting, the ending is not a big surprise but it's really powerful.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

I really like Ricardo Darin, and this was a terrific film. I didn't expect it to be so humorous, especially in the first half of the film. I have been to comedies which have not drawn as much audience laughter.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

Yeah, there is a nice touch of comedy to parts of it. The director, Juan Jose Campanella, directed 8 episodes of Strangers With Candy back years ago. I believe he also had something to do with the Upright Citizen Brigade, although I'm not sure in what way. He also directed an episode of 30 Rock, so he's not a total stranger to comedy.

And while I'm at it, I noticed that Brian Orndorff posted a review of this movie here at the site and gave it a Highly Recommended final score:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/44041...heir-eyes-the/

As much as I disagree with him more often than not, this is one of those cases where I certainly can't complain. For those of you who totally go against whatever his score is and sometimes wont check out what he praises please don't do that this time.

No offense intended BO.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

Quite a good film, seen it a week or so ago.

Seen 'A Prophet' this past weekend.

Seen 'The White Ribbon' months ago.

I have to say, So far 'The White Ribbon' still has my vote, although both films mentioned are very nice and deserved to win as well. I haven't seen the other nominees though.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

This was fantastic.

I could not have enjoyed it more. Every aspect of the film was was top flight.

The last time I was just in love with a movie like this... maybe when I watched 'Memories of Murder' the first time.

Great film.

That one scene in the soccer arena is absolutely brilliant. Guillermo Francella gives a great performance as Sandoval. I've always liked Ricardo Darin since I saw Nine Queens like 9 years ago.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

well guess what guys!
Billy Ray will write and direct an American remake of the Argentinian thriller "The Secret in Their Eyes" for Warner Bros.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warners is in negotiations to acquire the rights to Juan Jose Campanella's 2009 murder mystery, which Campanella adapted from the novel by Eduardo Sacheri.

The film, which won the foreign language Oscar in March, follows a retired criminal investigator in 2000 Buenos Aires who is writing a novel to try and come to terms with a rape and murder from 1974 that still haunts him.

Ray will set the film in present-day United States.

Mark Johnson is producing.

Ray recently co-wrote the 2009 thriller "State of Play" and "Source Code," which Summit will release in 2011. He is also writing a feature adaptation of the Fox TV series "24."

Ray wrote and directed "Shattered Glass" and co-wrote and directed "Breach.

Aren't we all excited!!!

Hollywood must think Americans only watch American films. I mean seriously, all these remakes of current foreign films are a bit insulting.

Re: The Secret in Their Eyes (Juan Jose Campanella)

Americans do only watch American films. That's the sad truth of it.

Hell this is a movie forum and the majority here only watch American films, and pretty much only the most mainstream American films at that. Those films overtly insult the the intelligence of the viewer and they're the 'blockbusters'.
