I can understand collecting VHS of stuff never released on DVD, but something new that is available on DVD? That's just crazy.

Vinyl is a very durable product and you can almost instantly go to the track you want to hear. It's also aesthetically pleasing (the feel of the vinyl, the cover art).
VHS is like the cassette tape - flimsy medium and clumsy to work with. Unlike vinyl, I doubt 50 years from now you'll see a lot of VHS tapes that have been played over and over.

I think this is kinda clever and cool for "House of the Devil". The flick's whole aesthetic is 80's throwback (even a poster for it is printed to look like its been folded).

And I agree with the "shill" on Amazon. One of the best movies of 2009.

I still have a lot of VHS tapes and when you take care of them they'll last just a long as a vinyl record.
Cool gimmick though, all it's missing is one of those oversized boxes and some gory artwork on the front.

Collecting 8-tracks would be crazy aside maybe from a novelty interest, but collecting vinyl is definitely not crazy given that pure analog can sound better and more natural than digital when played on high-quality audio equipment.
(Still collecting VHS over DVD, though, is crazy.)

Re: DVDs that come bundled with VHS tapes?
It's a fun gimmick. And for those of us who still own a VHS player (as a true lover of the cinematic arts should) we are just fine with something like this. Besides, it's not as though it was only released on VHS. It's a DVD that comes with a VHS tape just for campy fun. Or hell, forget this all together and get it on Blu. I haven't seen this film but I am very interested and if I decide to pick it up I'll probably go with this DVD/VHS combo.

That's awesome. Admittedly, I wasn't familiar with The House Of The Devil prior to seeing this topic. However, seeing them do this has made me add it to my Netflix queue when it's released; I'm that intrigued.
Assuming I end up liking the flick, I'd agree. At least it's getting a Blu release...

And I do still collect VHS. I have quite a few VHS and LD that have never been available on DVD and fetch impressive prices. While the Cat's Away VHS is a great example.

Actually, the first DVD-VHS combo pack I know of is The Ring Complete Special Package from Korea. I believe it came out around 2002 or so (four Japan Ring movies, plus VHS). And the VHS does work, it is the Ringu video that comes in a "copy" black cover to look like the one in the movie. Pretty cool. Here's a link to pics: http://nighthecamehome.blogspot.com/...-korea-r3.html
