Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

I just bought Criterion #46 The most dangerous game on ebay, and I have some concerns if it's legit, could someone who has a legit disc give me the serial information on the backside inner ring. Or if anyone knows where their is a master list I can compare the disc to.
Thanks in advance

Don't know if you'll find you answer there but Did you check Criterions web site?

Considering it isn't OOP, it probably isn't a bootleg...

You'd be surprised. I ran across an obvious bootleg of Sin City a few weeks after the DVD came out.

Check the DVD's Playing Surface (The Surface the Laser Beam "Reads") If its color is bright silver its a pressed disk, and most likely legit. Most Bootlegs have that bluish hue that's associated with a burned in DVD.

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

Use the program DVD Indentifier to see if it's a DVD-R.

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

Cracksky = way of using the link without having to by corel or word perfect? I might have missed something.

It does seem to have a blue tint to the back fo the disc. Does anyone have a legit disc so I can compare the back serial numbers to???

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

I clicked on the link and there is a download button for DVD identifier right near the top of the page - nothing at all about corel or word perfect! Look again.

What if you posted the numbers on your disc, maybe post a picture. Mystery might get solved faster.

This will also depend on where the seller got it (assuming it's a bootleg). For ages here in Toronto, boot DVDs were virtually indistinguishable from the real deal. Silver discs, dual-layered gold discs, slip cases, etc. The only tell-tale sign was the inclusion of small blocks of Chinese text on the packaging and Chinese subs added to the discs themselves. These were a byproduct of the studios using companies in China to press their discs. After hours, the same factories would crank out these slick dupes for the underground market, which stretched around the globe. Criterions were always popular, including MOST DANGEROUS GAME which I recall seeing in the odd boot shop here. I only ever got one Criterion boot, unintentionally, and that came from a second-hand music/movie store here that likely purchased it from someone without realizing where it came from (as it didn't have Chinese text on the packaging, but the subs were present on the disc). Thankfully, the black market here for Hollywood rips has dried up almost entirely after laws were rewritten, and the Chinese boot shops—which sadly still number too many—are stuck pirating Asian cinema for the most part (which still isn't fair), unless customers specifically ask for U.S. titles at certain shops, at which point a clerk usually disappears "somewhere" to return with the product. Apparently, some suburban gwailos here prefer this method—which looks like a drug transaction—to simply going and renting the film for about the same price.

Hopefully your Criterion turns out to be real. Just be aware that if quality boots made it to Toronto for several years, they probably made it everywhere else, especially online.

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

I would upload a image of the back ring of the DVD, but I hate to say this, I don't know how to. Could someone give me some quick and easy instructions.

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

take a pic, upload to comp, upload to some site that you get it on. Imageshack works, as do many others. From there get on here click the pic upload icon thingie and put it that property address from the pic and you should be good.

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

Download DVD Info Pro (there's a trial version of it that does what you need for it to do):

http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/dvd-info.html

Open the program --> OK --> Activate Later

Then with DVD in your computer's drive, choose the "Info" icon. Now, go to the clipboard (to copy the text) and paste it here in this thread. For example, my copy of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou shows:

---------------------------------------------------------

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

Ok that's enough, firs one was cute even though it isn't a boot, second one is a spoiler if you haven's seen the movie.

I've seen the movie and it still took me a while to figure out the spoiler is. I think it's safe. Plus the movie's 20 years old. I don't think there's much to spoil.

I agree completely...there has to be a certain time limitation when it comes to spoilers, or it just gets ridiculous....I mean, technically "I am your father" is a spoiler for Empire Strikes Back, but give me a break, it is part of the very fabric of pop culture at this point....

The Star Wars spoiler is a phenomenon that is unique. Like Rosebud. I believe that there should not be an expiration date on film spoilers. We all have piles of un-viewed/un-opened dvd's in our collections. I still have many films I want to watch from the 1930's onward. I'm always covering my ears/eyes when a potential spoiler may be revealed of a film I know I will see eventually. Way too many people assume everyone else has seen what they've seen and can therefore feel free to talk about it openly.

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

There are new film buffs that are young people, teens and lower 20's who havent had a chance to get around to movies people who are 50 years old have seen, so it's new to them.

Re: Need to know if Criterion is a bootleg.

I think it's sad if you don't' know:
Vader is Luke's Father
Kong Dies
Jesus Dies (still waiting on The Resurrection)

I'm just saying...that shit is massive pop culture...and it shouldn't piss anyone off if they find out extremely late.

Make sure that there is no Chinese writing on your Criterion DVD cover or DVD.
