Announced but never seen.

I was wondering what DVD have been announced and then canceled. Or a DVD that was announced to have bonus features, but then when the movie was released it didn't have all the bonus features or some of them were missing.

I remember when they announced "3000 miles to Graceland" it was supposed to have a bunch of special features. Then when it was released it had nothing.

seems to me like African Queen may be having this kind of missing release treatment.

It did come out, sort of. It's burn on demand from Amazon.

Sony announced, then cancelled A Study in Terror. 60s spy movie The Kremlin Letter didn't show up as announced.

Well, it was available. I believe the release date was 11/24. One week prior Amazon had it for pre-order. On the 24th I looked and there was a regular dvd listing under the title RITUALS but when I saw it was a burn on demand I blew it off because I have a dvd-r from the vhs release. There was even a customer review about the poor video quality.

I wouldn't hold your breath on any Warner catalog titles, though a few of those you listed will probably be dumped in the Archive ghetto at some point.

I find Warner's smug attitude about their grossly inferior Archive titles infuriating. They claim that "the fans are happy", that so many of the films we want are now available, but we want decent releases, not insanely overpriced, barebones, barely-up-to-VHS-standards DVD-Rs.

Ironically enough, that cover is what caused all the rights mumbo-jumbo to begin with. Without it, we'd have probably gotten the DVD!

The video isn't that bad compared with what was previously available. I have 3 of them, Bad Ronald, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and From Hell It Came. Bad Ronald looks the worst out of the three but honestly, it's never looked good, even on TV. From Hell It Came looks really good.

The reason they're doing it this way is because it's cheaper than mass producing something that isn't going to sell well and would go out of print quickly with high prices after that. Something like Bad Ronald only appeases a small number of people and there's no real money in it.

Yes it would be nice to have something they spent a lot of time on but realistically, it would be this or nothing. I'd rather have the product than not. It wouldn't surprise me for them to release one of these normally if a certain movie ended up selling really well.

I think you're exaggerating the weaknesses of the video quality of Warner Archive, and I can live with no bonus features (I'm sure DVDs with little to no bonus features -- the trailer doesn't count -- make up the majority of most people's collections). My only complaint is the price, which should be $5-7 cheaper (I could live with $12.99 Burn-on-Demand titles), with better bundle deals.

But WB in particular were known for including commentaries and/or featurettes on a majority of their catalog titles, which is why their move to the Archive hurts more than if, say, MGM went that route. They were the one major studio that always seemed to respect and cater to the serious, knowledgeable collector in the past.

Re: Announced but never seen.

I like having bonus features on purchase. If there is none, I'll just make it a rental. But with WB Archive, they are not available for rental, and they are not available for purchase overseas, and mentioned before, overpriced.

Don't own any WB archive discs, and don't intend to.

Not from Netflix, but Classic Flix seems to carry many of them. But who rents from them? My final word on the Archive is this (since it's my fault we've gotten off-topic here): the three criteria I use to help me decide which discs to buy are price, image quality, and extras. The Archive is unsatisfactory in all three areas of importance.

Didn't the El Cid 3 Disc come out? I'm not really familiar with that title, but I remember seeing a release of El Cid in the stores, not sure if it was 3 discs or not.

Re: Announced but never seen.

I also remembered the following were announced:
-the killer
-hard boiled

Both of these were supposed to come out in 2002 but never did.

As for the Dragon Dynasty titles on dvdaf: these were never announced, just talked about.

What's the story behind Rituals? I just read the Rue Morgue where they talk about the movie, but did not know it was canceled
