Hollywood about to have first ever 10 billion domestic BO.
http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Bus...00912415506994
Hollywood looks set to end 2009 on a high as tickets sales are predicted to hit the $10bn (£6.3bn) mark for the first time ever.
This year the film industry has seen millions of people flocking to cinemas to cheer themselves up in the economic gloom.
Ticket sales in the US have already passed 2008's $9.63bn (£6bn) figure thanks to the latest Transformers movie and vampire phenomenon The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
Both enjoyed two of the biggest opening weekends of all time.

Our local paper gave Avatar and Holmes a 3.5 star rating... The Squeakquel got 4.

Not that I listen to local papers much... a different local paper (different city) gave both Kill Bills a 1 out of 4, this city does the opposite and just gives shit high scores instead.

BOM has some partial numbers up:

The Monster that is Blind Side is just insane. This movie is going to make 200 million, which is insane.

A box office guru's take about tuesday's number:

Tuesday's number for Avatar putting itself in some lofty company:
Originally posted by Russ T. C.:
I think the fairest comparison to make with regards to the Tuesday number would be to look at the two movies that had a higher non-Holiday Monday number than Avatar: The Dark Knight ($24,493,313) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($18,140,271).
The Dark Knight dropped 14.8% on its first Tuesday to $20,868,722, while 'Dead Man's Chest' dropped 13.3% on its first Tuesday to $15,731,919.
Avatar's $16,086,461 qualifies as the second best non-Holiday Tuesday ever (third best overall).
However, the combined Monday and Tuesday number for Avatar ($32,472,281) is up 31% from Sunday's gross ($24,744,346).
That's a good deal more impressive than The Dark Knight (+4.1% from Sun to Mon/Tues) and 'Dead Man's Chest' (-4.1% from Sun to Mon/Tues).
So while the Mon to Tuesday number isn't the increase some were expecting, the Tuesday performance is still a very, very strong number for Avatar.

So did Avatar have a 0% Tuesday to Wednesday drop?
Also, how could you be surprised by the success of the Squeakquel? It's the fucking Squeakquel, man!

I was pretty surprised myself as how packed the theatre was last night for the 7pm showing of Avatar... I get that alot of people are off today, but just figured it would be more family time.

I poked my head in a theater showing Alvin and the Squeakuel, and it was packed with little kids and their parents. It's the easy choice for parents with little kids who want to take in a movie around the holidays.

Banking $16MM consistently on a weekday is pretty absurd. A bunch of movies never make that in a lifetime, and Avatar does it on a Tuesday.

Nice to see Avatar hold so well considering the Alvin #'s. I have a feeling this is going to be a huge weekend at the movies with so many big films out or coming out.

Some of my favorite critic quotes for Alvin:
"The world’s most irritatingly high-pitched rodents are back and noisier than ever, in this lobotomised rip-off of the High School Musical franchise."
"With an unengaging plot, flat jokes and shameless product placement, Alvin is a late contender for worst film of the year."
"Will kids eat up this cutely fractious claptrap? Of course they will. They'll eat up whatever you put in front of them. But that doesn't make The Squeakquel good for them."
"[It] could be the most aggressively terrible movie of the year."
"Three digimated rodents play guitar, go to school and create merry hell, all for the benefit of the "holiday season" audiences that made the original Chipmunks movie a "global phenomenon" to the tune of £350m. That's not phenomenal – that's criminal."
"The Squeakquel is painfully high-pitched. It reaches frequencies that could make bats plummet from the sky, clutching at their little ears in agony. It’s as if a mosquito equipped with a power tool is attempting to drill its way through your eardrum."
