Looks like reports are it made $27 million on Friday, which includes midnight and 3-D showings. Going to have to have some good staying power to make back the budget.

I think it'll have good word of mouth. I hope it will anyway. I loved it and hope it does well!

That's a decent opening day considering it's a non-established sci-fi film about blue aliens. I think the WOM will give it a good push for Xmas weekend.

It should do 75-80 Million this weekend, and a ton during the holidays.

This fucking snow storm here on the East Coast is going to hurt some of it's box-office this weekend. I braved the bad conditions and there was hardly anyone in my theater. Hell, there was hardly anyone in the whole mall. I'm actually surprised both were open.

Yeah, my friends and I were going to go as a group tonight, but 15" of snow says otherwise.

AMC Hoffman remained open for the morning so I braved the snow. I was surprised to see a good number turn out for the IMAX 3D showing. And yes, I loved it...

Sherlock looks kind of awful from the trailers, but I don't know, it might come up as a decent runner up to Avatar, though I dont see it making more next weekend.

I can see Squeakquel and Holmes biting off some off Avatar's business but I think Avatar's appeal is much wider than the relatively limited scope of those two movies.
And remember... Fox is not going to cannibalize Avatar with Squeakquel sales unless they were sure that it appealed to different groups of people.

With Christmas around the corner, I wouldn't be surprised to see The Blind Slide squeak up to $200m (as it seems to be the "family" flick of the season). Unlikely, but possible.

FWIW, Avatar has already made $230+ million worldwide. I also think its numbers would have been higher were it not for inclimate weather in major areas. Everyone at my showing liked it and said they would all tell friends. In all honesty, I see Avatar having major legs in the IMAX 3D format and filling shows for a while.

I haven't seen it, but given its stellar reviews this is sad. While I don't want to admit it, this might be the definitive signal of the end of 2D animation in theaters. Movies like Brother Bear and Treasure Island aren't worth mentioning as they were lackluster. But if a well praised movie can't make it, then it might be such.

Re: Weekend box office: 12/18 - 12/20 Avatar edition....
I saw it this afternoon and was hugely disappointed. Found it boring, tried too hard to be too many things and didn't succeed. I was fighting sleep the whole way through. I love 2D animation but this movie had nothing on classic Disney or recent Pixar.... hell, I thought Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs had more fun/wonder etc. than this one, so I'm not surprised to see it just doing alright... measured against Fantastic Mr. Fox, this was an utter turd. Now there is a movie that should have done much better at the box office.

My daughter works at the theater and it has been selling out. In fact the only 2 tickets to the midnight showing of "Morgans" was because Avatar was sold out.

The last decade has shown that animated films work just as well if they don't have stupid musical numbers. This is the sole reason I am not going to see that film.
