Disc menu buttons do not work on Up DVD?

I just got the DVD of Up from Netflix (I assume the basic one) and for some reason, neither the title or root menu buttons are working with it. They give me the unpleasant circle with the line through it that I get when trying to skip something that the disc manufacturer doesn't want me to skip. I have a Phillips 5992 player, haven't had problems with any other disc.

Has anyone else noticed this? I actually found a firmware upgrade and installed it, but it didn't fix the problem (and the only thing it claimed to fix was HDMI related, anyway).

All of the rental versions do not have menus, just previews and the movie. If you put this disc in a computer, the disc file lists it as "up_rental_version". This is just like the old vhs days.

IF you can get it to work on your computer, that is. It apperently has some kind of copy protection, it wold lock up my computer every time I put it in, and I know I'm not the only person that had this problem.

Thanks. Is that normal for Disney? I've never seen anything like that before (but I do not usually rent Disney movies from Netflix).

I bought Up on Blu-ray today and tried the DVD and sure enough it does have a menu. I also tried the Netflix copy on my computer and while it did play, it did not have the menu.

The BD of Up is a retail copy.

Re: Disc menu buttons do not work on Up DVD?

Hi. Rented "Up" from Blockbuster. No menu option. Also, film froze and returned to beginning. Returned disc. Same thing. No menu and disc froze in exact same spot and returned to beginning. Blockbuster guys tried playing disc in their blu ray player. No menu but movie played through. I've never seen this behavior before. Anybody hear of anything like this; not the menu thing but the freezing and returning to beginning?
Disc is DVD. Player is Oppo 970.
Thanks.
J
